I have a 1991 363 18ft ranger and was wanting to up grade.have been thinking about the 175xs and didnt know how they run.and have not seen anybody run one out there.have a older 175 on it now but i think it would hold 200.but would it be worth it and are the xs is a good motor.

Not fond of the Opti maxes. Technology is good and they make good power and are cheap on fuel. BUT when they have a problem it is usually a lot more expensive than a EFI or Carb engine to repair.</p>

Is there something wrong with your engine or just looking for more speed???? What year is your 175? Is it EFI or carbureted? May be cheaper to build yours if just looking for more power.

I have an '05 175 opti and have been happy with it. My neighbor has an '09 175 XS and he is very happy with it. Wrenchin asked the pivotal question-what are you looking for? Speed or mileage?

Fact is, whatever "color" new engine you buy now will use some sort of DFI-type technology. When ANY of them break, it will be expensive. Mercury has run the Optimax engines since the late '90's. IMO, it's the most "tested" of the big 3 and they will stand behind their products. Get all the warranty you can whatever you buy. My personal choice is painted Phantom Black. Good luck!

The 175 Pro XS will be a great engine. Every motor in the Pro XS series has been a great engine. It will likely come with a five year warranty so you don't have to worry about how much it costs to repair. At least not for five years.

Sad part is some to the newer Mercs 4 strokes are actually made by Yamaha. When you buy software for the EFI and DFI it is a choice to get it with the Mercs manufactured by Yamaha or buy it later as a upgrade. They have been making some of the smaller HP carbureted engines for about 8 years that I know of and just putting the Merc badges on them. I have had to buy Yamaha parts because Mercury would only sell the assembly and no service parts. Yamaha actually sold individual pieces. Go figure emoRolleyes

would like to have alot of hole shot.and alot better gas miles.but it is very scary to think if i ever had to have work done on the new motor.after warranty ran out.and would it have the power like my 175 does now or could get out of it.think i would have to go to 200xs to be able to match it.

If the 175 is like the rest of the XS engines, it`s probably going to have real close to 200HP when its well broken in. The 225xs winds up close to 245 after about 40 hrs. And my 225xs is A BEAST compared to the 225Venom Johnson I had on my Bullet previously and it`s only got 20 hrs on it so far. Fished 2 TX and 3 practice days, have used 19 gallons. I`d get as much horsepower as insurance will allow in the XS line. A MercMonitor is also a good investment if you go Merc for 350$

I've got a 175 ProXS on a new Ranger. By myself this boat comes out of the hole in less than 4 seconds. Good mid range punch and top end, excellent gas milage.

hntnfsh91 - 5/27/2010 11:54 AM if you want hole shot, go with a yamaha. Yamahas have better low end (hole shot) than any other motor.
