Merc water Impeller

Time to replace again. Could someone, once and for all, please tell me the correct gear to have the shifter in as I remove the lower end? I have checked the web and get differentresponses.</p>

I have a 2002 - 150XL Mercury Saltwater engine. I have heard neutral, drive and does not matter. Any advise will beappreciated. Most likely LOL.</p>

I have a 50 hp merc, and it was a lot easier for me to put it on in gear, because I could move the prop and get the impeller to start in the housing and work its way down on top of it. Once I was able to get the drive back in place I kicked it back in neutral before bolting it together. Don't know if this will help or not.

I personally do those in neutral. Just my .02
