1996 Mercuy 2.6 liter 150 stop to fish got ready to go and motor starter wouldn't kick in so took the cover off and jump the solenoid or coil you know with a screwdriver cranked and ran fine. What needs replacing? emoScratch
Thanks

without going into all the details that it could be or what it takes, an easy way to check the solenoid is to hook a testlight or voltmeter on the small post that has the yellow/red tracer wire on the starter solenoid. Ground the other lead of light or voltmeter to good ground. Have someone turn key switch to engage starter and see if you have voltage here. this will tell you if your getting the power from the key switch to engage the solenoid. You can also ck the ground this way by grounding your testing device to the small post with the black wire on it at the solenoid and repeating this ck. If vvoltage is good here the solenoid needs replacing. (sometimes you will even here a solenoid click or engage but no starter movement because the contact between the two big post is not making the connection from the red positive wire to the yellow starter wire ) I say this because sometimes even if you hear a solenoid click its no good.

The only other thing I can add is to check the fuse under the hood. There is one that controls the current that goes to the small post.

Thanks guys I replaced the solenoid but thats not it so I took it to mechainic. the fuse under the cover was ok he said good chance the start switch or the switch when it is in gear want start. I'll let yuns know. thanks again anyway.

got boat back the switch in the control shifter that want let the motor start in gear is not working or stuck. we bybass it and motor cranks when I turn the key just besure it is in neutral. can someone tell me how to get to the switch and get the controls apart to get to the switch. controls are the mercury that don't have a key switch in it.
Thanks

It should have a name on the control box itself but normaly it should be bolts entered from the back and remove one from the handle and it should come apart.

If its a mercury panel mount with a throttle only button in the handle, dont forget to put the handle in throttle only position to remove button to access handle bolt. If you try to pry the button out without it in this position the button will break.

Thanks thor emoWorthy I got the button out so I'll work on it more this evening. QuickSilver 3000 is whats on the cover. I'll keep yall updated emoThanks

Well I'm still study and trying to find more info . I dont know where the switch is in the box what kind of wires and cables to deal with in getting the box out and getting it apart. as yall see I'm kinda freaking out but I can't afford to pay big $$$ for this and it seems over whelming emoBang emoScratch emoScratch emoConfused
