CHECK MY MER. FOOT FOR WATER. NO WATER [GOOD] emoSmile WHAT COLORIS THE OIL IN THE FOOT ?. MY IS LIGTH BROWN AND THICK..AND WHAT KIND OF OIL CAN I USE. ITS A 1979 MER. 80HP. emoScratch emoScratch

The light brown color could mean it has had a little water in it at one time. Its time to replace those little seals behind the fill and drain screws. You can get a decent 90 weight lower gear oil and any marina or even at wally world or at your local parts store. Just make sure it says for marine use on it.

All 80-90's are API GL5. This is the expansion rate of the fluid. You pay word marine to be on it. Alot of the older mercury manuals tell you to use 80-90 automotive. Go to wally world and get a quart of marine and automotive and they will have the same ratings just different prices!!! I have ran automotive fluids in mine and my customers with 0 problems except heavier wallets. Just my 2 cents worth.
