So, let's hear e'm. Pros and cons about Mercury motors. Thinking about buying another one, so i just want to hear what everyone has to say about e'm. Should I look into buying an Evinrude or Yamaha?

I had a 225 optimax on my last boat and the new one has a 250 pro xs. I really like the optimax and had absolutely no problems with it. Havent had the new one out but once but hopefully I will have just as much luck out of this one.

I've had three Evinrudes, a 90, 150 & 225, a 225 Yamaha and now have a 115 Merc Optimax. Didn't have any trouble with any of them except the Evinrude 225. The power pack went out twice. All three Evinrudes were cold natured and hard to start in the winter, very embarrassing at the ramp. These were all carberated engines, I'm sure the newer ones don't have this problem.

I had the Yamaha 225 for six years with no trouble and low maintance cost, loved it.

I've had the 115 optimax for one year. It is an excellent motor, very quiet running, runs great, is a fuel mizer and starts almost instantly. However to keep the warranty, which is a must, service is expensive.

Every manufacture has a few duds in their line-up, however overall they all have good products. Having a good dealer is more important than brand, just in case you get one of the few duds.

I love Mercurys. I like the perfomace aspect. Go to the drag races and you see 98% mercs. That tell you something. BUT the OMC's are generaly more reliable and parts are generaly less expensive. I Prefer the mercs. but would have any of the big 3 Mer, OMC, and yammi.

Guys, mercs don't always outrun rudes. On a boat like a 201 pro a 250 etec is as fast or faster than a 250 pro xs. The rudes is higher displacement. On lighter boats like bullets and allisons the mercs are superior. Mainly because they have better gearcase options for surfacing options. Yamaha's are generally a little off on power compared to the mercs and rudes. I personally have a 250XS merc.
