mid 80's 25 hp problem

went fishing this morning and man did i have some bad luck , runnin in bout 5 foot of water and hit somethin the motor kicked up, so i stopped looked at the foot everything looked ok , but when i went to take off it would jump out of gear makin a loud clickin noise , i could reach back on the motor and actually hold the gear shift lever with my hand and it would idle , but if i didint hold pressure on the linkage it would jump out of gear and make the dreadful noise , any tips on what it may be would be appreciated , thanks for the help .

Sounds like you have stripped the clutch dog. What kind of motor is it?

it is an evinrude no power trim , what kind of money you talkin ?

Not sure, the last one I bought 10 years ago, was to the best of my memory $125 ish. You may be able to save yours if you have a Dremel tool and you didn't scar it to bad. That $ figure is probably not right.

It is in the gear case, you will have to split the bottom of the foot, should be 6-7 screws. The dog is the part that slides on the shaft to engage the gears. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined you can do this.
