Better late than never. Due to a family situation this is our first trip to middle Tennessee this season. On Tue Dec 21 my grandson & I went hunting at a lease that I am on in Lincoln Co. We got over to one of the buddy stands overlooking a field that did not get bushhogged this year and the deer like to cross it on a regular basis. Just after daylight there was movement and I glassed a deer that turned out to be a 3 pt. My grandson being 10 years old said he wanted to shoot it for it would be his first buck with horns. Robert has harvested a button buck during muzzle loader season thiss year. So being the kind hearted person toward him that I am I gave him the thumbs up. His 308 was on the mark! He was ready to jump down to put his hands on his first trophy when another deer stepped out to crosss the field. I glassed it and it was a 5 pt buck. My grandson wanted me to shoot it and I thought how cool would it be for both of us to harvest bucks on the same hunt. So it presented a good broadside shot and I took it.
Needless to say Robert now was ready to hit the ground running to look at both deer but I got him to sit back down and settle down to be sure the animals expire. We both started replaying what had just taken place, talking about the excitment, shaking, intermitted breathing and now giggling like two kids giving high fives that goes along with all the celebrating. It will be a memory that I will carry with me for life.
We got both bucks to the truck and to the processor. Went and grabbed some lunch and went for a little ride that I knew we would see several deer to build up even more excitement. We made a big circle and came back out by our property we hunt and decided to climb back into the stand for a while longer. We decided to go back to the stand we had hunted earlier in the day. Had not been in the stand but about 45 minutes or so and Robert said "Deer!" I glassed the animal and it was a doe. I gave the thumbs up and Robert shouldered his rifle and busted the doe through the boiler room. Robert turned his head to me and calmly as a seasoned hunter could say he said, "One more doe today and I will have my limit." I thought I was going to roll out of the stand it tickled me so.
We got all our stuff lowered down and got on the ground to look at the doe. We pulled it's engine and decided that the day just could get any better and decided to head back home. We cut this one up today for the freezer. Now we have planned on our next trip over to middle Tennessee and can not wait until Tuesday. Hopefully Robert will have an oppertunity at a better, rather larger buck. I do not think the first buck can be replaced by a better buck, only larger. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
