Mine is slow in 4th and will throw you out in 5th. This sux. The dealer put a new card in it, same thing. Sure wish I had went with the variable speed maxxum. Anybody else having this problem?

Mine is the same way and I too wish I had gotten the Maxxim. I also just had my foot peddle catch on fire. Two of the wires from the speed control rubeed eachother till the insulation was gone and burned the connectors. I taped the wires and replaced the connectors. This was a bad design, because when the foot peddle is all the way forward, it squashes the two wires. I may get a motorguide next

I talked to John ??? the trolling motor guy in Cleveland tonight. He said that thats how they are, hes heard lots of complaints about them. Hes going to check it out for me though when I can get it to him. I sure did love my old Evinrude 24, light as hack and worked great, I miss it.

I have a better idea for you. Buy a motor guide digital trolling motor. I sold my boat with a 70 lb MG digital and my z-20 came with a minn kota maxpro 80. It is an absolute piece of chit compared to the motorguide. It is brand new and it has already had to have a new armature put in it. Everything about the motor guides are better. I have no bias towards either product other than the fact that the MG is so much better.

Thats what I'm hearing from some folks too. Others are just the opposite though. If I can find an OMC in real good shape, I'll put it on there.

hey flip...I just looked out of curiosity on E-Bay and there was a couple of OMC trollers on there....mostly 12V but one was 50lb foot control that looked new and he claimed it had only been used a couple of years 97` model...might check it out under EBAY Motors,,, "trolling motors"...I bet if you check out some of the shops that in back somewhere there are enough pieces around to put a good unit together....if you can`t find a whole one ....they made bunch of them over the years and from what I`ve learned by having one for 25 years....most of the parts interchange regardless of model...foot control, hand control , 12v ,24v the basic pieces are the same...I believe mine is just a 54lb so the one Ebay may be just right for your G3.....I`ll look around the shops up here as I get around and see if they have anything....
oh yeah I aquired a nice "parts" one from x-roads basser a few months back...he was cleaning out garage..
I like the MG digital features a buddy`s boat had on it ,but he had to send it back to factory twice in a year when the computer went wacky....he got quick service though...turned around in about a week.

Flip, I have a Maxxium 80 with the variable speed and it is the best trolling motor I have ever used. It has the softstart and the foot control is very smooth compared to the Motor Guides. I have not see the Motor Guide Digitals but I have been in 3 boats with other MG's and the steering sucks and they are not nearly built as strong as my Minn Kota. I am not sure if mine is reinforced as it is a long shaft model but it is twice a struday as a 70 lb Motor Guide.

Your point about the 5 speed is very true. I drive Billy's boat yesterday and 4 is too slow and 5 is too fast and will throw you out of the boat if pointed in the wrong direction.

One last thing about the Maxxium's with the variable speed is they are very, very good on batteries. I have run mine for 3 days straight and they needle on the charger barely moves when I hook them up. Very nice.

I would like to check out the Motor Guide digitals one day but for my money the standard Motor Guides are sub-par to the Maxxiums with the varaible speed.

Thanks guys. I couldnt buy a new one right now, this one is only 9 months old, wouldnt feel right. I'll either come across a good used one at the right price or wait a while and try to break this one so I can justify buying one emoBigsmile , they are tough though.

I might have your nice used one at a nice price. I wont give it away but I would like to switch back to a MG digital. Being as I have fished with both in the past year I can for sure tell you which one is best!!!!

No Complaints from me! I have the Minn-Kota 24volt 70lb thrust RipTide and love it. It pulls my big ole Trawler plenty fast. I do not know the speed but as a comparison to something, I had my Auto-pilot set toward Watts Bar Dam. I had the TM at top speed running up stream at the Coal Loading dock below the dam in full current and we were pulling up stream. Mine has the varible speed control therefore I do not get that surge. I also have the same TM in the fresh water model, the PowerDrive 65lb without a boat.

I just put a new Minn Kota Power Drive 70lb with Auto Pilot and US2 on my Hydrasport X270. I replaced a Johnson 12/24 foot control with the Minn Kota and I couldn't be happier! It's variable speed and starts very smoothly and is quite as a mouse. The Auto Pilot is the cat's meow! You just point the trolling motor in the direction you want to go and it takes over. It's so cool to watch the trolling motor make steering corrections when the wind or current trys to pull you off course. I figure it will make a day of fishing a lot less tiresome for an old-timer like me. If you want to move to another spot and not start up the big motor, just point it that way, hit the Auto Pilot button and you can have yourself a sandwich or tie on another lure, neat! The only minor drawback I see with this trolling motor is that it is a little harder to pull up than my old one. I plan on adding a handle to the shaft to help with this.

I ran for about 4 hours Monday and it only used 25% of the batterys...............impressive. As for power, it will pull my 17 foot boat at 3 mph. I got the optional US2 which has the transducer in the motor housing. I haven't tried that yet, will let you know when I do.

I agree 100% with you Sam

You will get to loving it even more than that. I have the saltwater version, The Riptide. I have used mine for a couple years. I do not think I could ever go back.

How do you like your wired remote that you can run from anywhere in your boat. When I am fishing alone, I troll from my rocket launchers in the rear. I set my TM on Autopilot, go to the back of the boat where I can adjust the speed and tweek the direction from the transom. Never have to go to the TM until I am ready to quit or to switch off Autopilot.

If you are fishing a bank with current, you can lock in your direction and adjust your speed to hover in place. That thing will do so much for you.

Enjoy, David

Man. that's good to hear! I was anxious about giving up the old cable unit, but I believe I did the right thing. I appreciate the comments about the remote, at this point I haven't added that feature yet but I probably will. I have a bit of a hip joint problem and the less stumbling around in I do, the better!

I have a birthday coming up, maybe that'll fetch me the remote setup. :)

I'm heading to Tellico mid-week to try and catch a walleye or two. I've not fished for them but a couple of times so I've got a lot to learn there. I did have one exceptionally good trip a couple of years ago on Tellico. My cousin and I bass fished until about 2:00am and then switched to walleye fishing when my cousin heard the minnows splashing next to the bank. We started paralleling the bank with some big crank baits and caught 5 nice walleyes within an hour. Aint been able to repeat that since then though. Such is fishing.

P.S. The hovering thing sounds good, I'll have to try that.

P.S.S. What's rocket launcher? A downrigger

Just a "watch out" for anyone installing a Minn Kota trolling motor with the US2 built-in transducer:

The trolling motors with the US2 (Universal Sonar 2) cannot be connected in a trolling motor circuit that connects the trolling motors to cranking battery by way of a ground wire. This includes most "charge on the run" systems. Also, Depthfinders using the US2 cannot be connect to either trolling motor battery. They must be connect to a separate circuit from the trolling motor. The trolling motors with the US2 have the transducer grounded internally to reduce the chance of interferance. This grounding will cause a short through the depth finder circuit if the depth finder is connected in the same circuit as the trolling motor batteries. John Jone

I know this is a problem since I done it on mine! :(
