i have a 1989 merc xr4 blackmax on the bullet that i bought . is it suposed to charge the cranking battery
while running? if it does what and where do i need to check to make sure that it is ?
because it doesnt seem to be if its supposed to.

I have a mid-80's Black Max with the same problem.

There are at least two components to the engine's charging system...the prime two are the stator and I can't think of the other one off the top of my head.

Get a Merc shop manual or take it to a pro if you are mechanically/ electrically challenged as I am.emoScratch

I have a 88 Marnier & as long as I run the big motor it stays up but more fishing & using the ass. tends to pull it down and needs to be charged from time to time. Got a 3 bank charger from bass pro a while back. No worries now plug it in and get all of them at once every time.

the other part would be the rectfier. i found out that yes it does and that there are 3 different charging systems that
could be on that motor the first 2 are lower amp recifiers that cost $25-40 for the part the 3rd is a 40 amp that cost
over $500 emoEek emoEek emoEek

i'll have to look at mine when i get home to see which one it is ..... lordy i hope its one of the cheaper ones

David, if you have the equipment to run your engine out of water and have a electrical meter then you may be able to see if your engine is trying to charge the battery.  With the engine running and throttled up to about 3,000 RPM's, test your starting battery.  If you are reading more than 13 volts, that indicates that your engine is putting out a charge.  You (I think) should be reading about 14.5 volts at that RPM.  If your engine is charging but your battery is not building and storing volts then it can be one of two other things.  A bad battery/ possibilly low on water and/or a dirty or loose battery terminal.  Check all connections on both ends of the battery terminals.

well i have voltage from the stator to the regulator and nothing to the battery it is the regulator/rectifier and it is also
the 45 amp $500 version emoBang

now here is where i tell on myself to hopefully save someone else from my mistake emoDoh
while i was hooking the jumper cables from the cranking to the trolling, being ever so careful to disconect
the 2nd tm batt, i let the positve of the jumper cable allready attached to the crank batt brush against
the neg of the tm batt. nothing big just a breif small spark. but that was all that was needed to fry a
$500 regulator emoDoh emoDoh emoDoh leason learned

it also took out the bank of the 2 bank on board charger that it was attached to emoBang emoBang emoBang
