Santa is going to bring me a 70lb thrust foot-control motor to replace my 12 year old OMC 42 lb thrust.

I have narrowed my choices to an M-K 70 Edge or a M-G Pro 70. I want to keep the price below $600. Any experience??

NICE Santa!! After running both over the years, my choice would be any of the Minn-Kota Max Pro series motors if you can swing one. The MK battery "Maximizer" function, lift assist and universal sonar transducers work great. Infinite speed adjustment is a "must have", IMO, whichever way you go. Bro' Snuffy, will probably take your old OMC off your hands. Happy Thanksgiving!!

Alan, this will turn into a ford/chevy debate but I will give my two cents. I have not owned either of the two models you mentioned but I have owned the MK maxpro 8O and the MG tour digital 82 and if I was going to buy a new one it would be the motorguide. To me it is just a better built, easier to operate unit and MG is lighter than MK. Neither of them are bullet proof. My MG threw the trolling breaker twice yesterday which tells me something may be wrong as it has never done this before. I'm afraid the grass at guntersville may have had an adverse affect last week.

I don't have anything against the MG except the foot peddle is too small and the switch is also small. I have the M-K maxxim 70 and I love it. I had the M-K edge 70 before, but it is only five speeds, which leaves you going too slow or too fast. The maxxim has a rheostat dial so it can be fine tuned, and is only 100 more dollars

MB, I had an Edge 70 on my boat. Its a fine motor except that its not variable speed. The 5 speed is too slow in 4th and will throw you out in 5th. I kicked myself in the butt for 1 1/2 years for not spending the extra little bit to get the maxxum. I bought 1 from Spur and its doing great. If you get 12 years of service out of this one, spending 100 bucks more aint a bad value. I dont know about Motor Guide, I'm sure they are good motors too. Good luck whichever way you go.

I like both but I'm partial to the MG for the reasons that lance gave. I have a new 24 volt 70 pound thrust on my boat and really, really like it

based on prop prices and support for the trolling motor in this area I would go with a minn kota because I have had a hard time whenever I need anything for my motorguide.

MB, why do you need a 70# now and got away with a 42# for years? Are you taking Fat Albert with you every day now?

that's a great deal, but I need at least 70 lbs thrust.

I should have said I "want" a 70 lb thrust TM. I fish the river a lot. I throw crankbaits a lot. I get hung up a lot. I don't like breaking off a crankbait, so I often need to move back against the current. It doesn't take very much current to overwhelm a 42 lb TM. Besides, I've been a good boy this year, so I should get what I want for Christmas!!

I did decide to upgrade to the Maxxum Minn-Kota. Thanks, everyone for the input. I would never have known about the speed control issues on the edge series without it.

I have a MG on my boat, and my partner has a MK. I like the MG better, the pedal has the on/off button where I was used to it being, it is quieter, smoother, and not as heavy.
