Motor issues.....

I have an 89 Mercury XR4 150 black max. Seems to idle fine, but when I put it into gear and try to take off, it just boggs down and down and doesn't want to go anywhere. I'll try over and over and finally it will take off , but will not get the normal top end speed. It will hit 44, but usually hits 54. Any help would be apreciated.

it could be water in the gas or what he said a clogged or bad fuel filter. I have also seen the bulb thats on the fuel line right where it goes into the motor cause that. Take someone with you to the lake and when it starts that have them squeeze the bulb and see if it clears up.

Could be as simple as a fouled plug. I would replace the plugs first. If still present, could be stator, switch box, trigger, ect. Could also be mechanical. There are some simple tests. give me a call and I will walk you through some.
