Does anyone know why my 150 merc would smoke constantly when first starting, idling etc. It seems to be ok after that but if it idles for 5 minutes it'll smoke for 5 minutes??? Would appreciate any info. I always mix the oil/gas and use QUICKSILVER 100% of the time. Motor is 1984 model. Thanks.

You have the oil/gas mixture a little heavy on the oil. They will smoke more when cold because the motor isn't warmed up, once the motor gets warmed up the motor is running more effeciently and the smoke goes away. The motor is still burning the oil in the gas but better.

My Merc 150 Black Max (mid-80's model also) smokes more than I'd like it to as well. I use Quicksilver oil 50-to-1 (6 gal gas and 16 oz oil), and my mechanic told me that that was the MINIMUM oil to gas ratio, and that I should add an additional 8 oz/ gal to insure proper lubrication. I don't because it smokes so much.

I'm embarassed when it idles. I've been told "that's an old Merc...get used to it, the older ones just do that".

You might want to check out DIY.com...there are a couple of Merc experts on one of the forums there, if the CFF Merc experts can not answer.

I know this doesn't help, but I thought I'd share what I've heard.

Hey man don't be embarrassed it's paid for. Mine is a 95 model 225 and it smokes too. Have you priced a new one, they should be embarrassed to sell one for that price without a lifetime guarantee......emoBigsmile

Heck-fire, I have a 95 model 150hp, and I am as proud as a peacock!

If it gets you around the lake, you got nothin to be embarrased about!

Shoot, I'm not embarrassed by my boat nor my little 150. She runs just fine once you get her up on plane and gets me around just fine. It'll do 58, but I'm happy at 40-45.

It just bothers me to throw all that smoke into the air when idling. Those poor folks on the fishing pier at WTCreek almost always get a good, solid cloud of smoke before I get out of there...plus the "environmental issue".

And I've heard "you think you got enough oil in that thing?".

And at the price of something else, well...I guess everybody that my cloud of stench offends will just have to kiss my grits!

One thing about those motors, they will keep the skeeters off of you in the summer. I remember one winter years a go about 15 boats were ganged up below the nick catching sauger and here comes the game warden checking license, he puttered around for about 30 minutes doing his thing going from boat to boat and the oil smoke was just hanging in the cool damp air, he almost made us sick. This might have been Rsimms,

but we couldn't see his face for the foggy smoke.

Guys you can switch to that over priced synthetic oil and have less smoke. I don't concern myself with the smoke as it makes a good sign that I have powered up so don't run into me.emoLaugh

Thanks for the input, I have been mixing the Quicksilver oil 16oz/6gal EXACTLY and I'm scared to put in less oil for fear of a worse problem so I'll just learn to like the smoke rather than buy a new one, those thangs are EXPENSIVE. If you see one at WT smoking while idling just say HEY to Gator.

I`ve thought about this statement the mechanic made about minimum oil requirements......I`m not gonna say he`s not a good mechanic but I don`t believe he`s right about 50:1 being the minimum. Maybe he just mispoke.
But 50:1 is correct for maximum RPM and you have much more than is needed for idle. I don`t believe you would have the millions of premix engines ,some 40-50 years old that have never needed service if 50:1 was not correct.
I know since I started pre-mixing on my Johnson 225 that I`m using a lot more oil than when it was doing it itself. Which is tough when you`re using Amsoil at 40$ a gallon...but I sleep better at nite.
