ok apparently my linkage is not pushing my throttle enough for my carbs to open emoScratch at the same time I am thinking that my gear shift is not going all the way forward like it used to. emoScratch

Im new to boating and really want to protect my investment however the boat is not going anywhere as fast as she used to, the above diagnosis is from my boss who has some experience with out board motors. He advised to take of the linkage and tighten then put back and good to go.

its a 1984 90hp evinrude used to go about 30mph not does good to break 10mph

Will this work or do I need to find a mechanic?

any help is appreciated

synchonizing the throttle plates and the pick-up point are vital to decent performance .....and a giant size pain if you don`t know how to do it by the book....and don`t have the book. wear and tear can be hard to detect with the little rods connecting the plates and stuff. If you can take it to an experienced mechanic like wrenchin2 he can probably check it out in a short time. Or get you a manual and a dose of patience.

you also have the spark advance to deal with and all this is connected to the shifter and is linked to thethrottle stuff too. It can be maddening to figure out which part is actually out of adjustment.

Probably won`t cost too much to have a pro do it.

I know the feeling my boat is in the shop here in SC because when I push the throttle forward it shuts off. When I come off plane it idles real rough. I was thinking it was a linkage problem so I just to it to a outboard repair place told them to clean and adjust the carbs while they have it.

The linkage on your motor has plastic two piece rollers what we see most often is the outer shell comes of which reduces the size of the roller and this throws the linkage and sinc off look for roller on right side of motor more than likley it has just the black part of the roller and not the clear part

I think spam has it it on the head or one the ball and sockets going to the timer module has broken one either the arm or module and is not allowing the timing to advance. I have seen it a few times also.

Thanks for all the replies guys, apparently we jiggled something the right way cause when we took her out today she was spot on if not faster than before also the throttle arm was going all the way forward again

still may get it looked at in the future really dont want to over do it

thanks again

Wrechin I think your right on the control box issue, had the same problems this morning starting out so we casually stroll to our spot fish then we get ready to leave same thing well on the long journey back I wiggle the gear shift and boom she would let me push the throttle all the way down and would get up to top speed, Which I didnt do for long as they were other boaters around and I leave one heck of a wake.

Sounds like HOT FOOT time!!!!!!!!! May be more cost effective than replacing pieces in the box. I had one that had a chunk broke out and it was hanging in the missing chunk. Wish I had known. I was at the park this afternoon runing a boat I put a lower on. Could have looked at it if you were close!
