I was taking the oil out of my lower unit today. About 15 minutes after unscrewing it to start releasing the oil, I noticed that the motor had come down and smashed into the old minnow bucket.

I trimed it up again about 5 inches and the same thing happened. The motor slowly came back down and smashed into the bucket again! (Really slow/not where you can notice it by looking at it)

Anyone know what to do, or atleast what the problem may be?

Thanks!

Check valve has some debris in it or has gone bad. I have an older merc 90 that was like this, and I ran it for years that way.

If you took out the lower screw and not the vent screw, this is why it took so long for the oil to come out. Make sure you take out the vent screw and pump the oil in from the bottom. When it comes out the vent hole, put that screw back in, and let it drain out the bottom for a few seconds and replace the bottom screw. The lower unit oil has NOTHING to do with the trim

Sounds like you have a leaky seal, take it to an outboard shop that services your brand of motor and let them look at it. The trim is supposed to stay exactly where you position it. It might be just something simple like low oil in the trim resivoir.

Now I was thinking it had something to do with the hydrolics.

I also know that the lower unit oil doesn't have anything to do with it.

This has never been a problem before - but the boat has been in storage for 2 months and a couple days... I don't know what went wrong.

I'm going to get a closer look at it this weekend.

JTF - the old oil came out just fine - Just the trim that is not holding the motor at a stable position.

But what were you saying about a check valve? I don't understand. I must be dumb!

Doc1 - I'm going to Cleveland Boat Center Friday to get new oil to place in the lower unit - I'll ask and see what they have to say about it.

Hopefully I can get this TINY problem under control and not have to take it in to the shop - We've only spent $45 dollars so far getting things repaired on the boat (Only problem that we've had/just needed a new ignition) and I know things can be expensive at these little repair shops!

JUST SOMETHING TO CHECK.....THERE IS A SCREW ON THE RIGHT SIDE (MOST LIKELY , IF NOT LOOK ON LEFT SIDE) OF THE ENGINE MOUNT ...SHOULD BE SORT OF IN LINE WITH THE LIFT CYLINDER AND PUMP.....IT`S KINDA BACK IN THE MOUNT AN INCH OR TWO...YOU PROBABLY WON`T SEE IT UNLESS YOUR EYE IS LINED UP WITH HOLE JUST RIGHT. IT IS A BLEEDER SCREW TO GET ANY AIR OUT OF THE SYSTEM IF YOU LOSE THE SEAL ON THE SYSTEM. SOMETIMES IT GETS USED TO LOWER THE ENGINE IF NO POWER OR SOME OTHER PROBLEM ARISES. ONCE YOU FIND IT ......TRY TIGHTENING IT WITH A REGULAR SCREW DRIVER. iF IT`S LOOSE AT ALL, IT COULD BE YOUR PROBLEM.
THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS KINDA TRICKY TO GET THE AIR OUT AND THE OIL IN. YOU MIGHT WANT TO TAKE IT TO SOMEBODY. SHOULDN`T COST TOO MUCH IF IT`S JUST LOW OF OIL OR HAS GOTTEN AIR IN THE SYSTEM SOMEHOW.

Kevin, take the boat with you when you go to the dealer to get the lower end oil, they might be able to fix the trim while you are there.

All the oil is now drained into the bucket from the lower unit - So I checked the motor out again, fooled around by trimming it up and down and steering it left to right. (I knew that wouldn't work!!)

So my decision will be Doc1's advice by taking it to the Boat Center.

I'm no boat mechanic and I don't know much about boats yet - so I don't know what in the world you're talking about SNUFFY!!

But thanks for trying to help!

I will keep this updated...
Thanks guys!!

My boat must have a mind of it's own!

The trim is working appropriatly now, and the motor is not slowly coming down anymore, it's staying in a stable position as of where I put it... I don't know what I did!

You might have burped it by making it go up and down, I would still take it by the dealer and tell them what you done.
