I have a 1989 200 HP Johnson outboard on a 1989 Stratos 201. I was on the lake the other day and went to turn off the outboard and the ignition key went to the off position, but the motor kept running. I tried it several times with no luck. We headed back to the ramp and when I got there, it did turn it off. However, I had to restart it to load it on the trailer and it again would not stop running when I turned the key to the off position. I also tried pulling the "kill switch" to stop the outboard and that did not work either.

Has anyone had anything like this happen to them and if so, what did it turn out to be? How did you fix it? Is it a matter of replacing both the ignition switch itself and the "kill switch" ?

Thanks in advance for you help,

Well mine wouldn't start yesterday. I'll trade ya a little of mine for a little of yours ;)

Open our ignition, I"m sure there has to be a bad connection somewhere.

Got a ground wire feeding from another electrical supply switch or component.........try re grounding ign switch........ emoGeezer emoUSA

pull your ignition switch and look for a black with yellow stripe, that's the kill swich wire , it goes thru you harness to the powerpack. if its not broke at the ignition switch check at poerpcak, if not broke there check the wire for a short .if no short then its probably a powerpack going bad
