I'm making a fishing report but also reporting the fact that...I wuz robbed. I didn't even realize it until after 30 minutes of fishing. I'll get to the gory details in a bit. We started fishing around 10:15 am in Wolftever Creek. Deb and I caught two small crappie close to Rabbit Island in about 10 feet of water. We were using the jigs that we had left on our rods from Sunday. A BG electric chicken and a white Lake Fork Baby Shad. I was using a 1/16 oz. white Road Runner jig head on Hi-Vis line and Deb was using a 1/16 oz. chartreuse Road Runner jig head on clear 4lb. Mr. Crappie line. Deb caught two nice blue cats about 20 minutes apart on the Lake Ford shad. We were a little surprised as it's usually a channel cat we run across in the creek. We're here after crappie...wassup this this ? I thought the first one was a bass as it ran off across the top of the water with her jig. We were a little let down when it was a catfish. Both fish were similar in size but the second was slightly larger. They were fun for Deb on 4lb test line. I think they were feeding on the numerous shad that we saw. I made sure I didn't get finned this time like I did with the last blue cat we caught.
It's been about 30 minutes and I decide to try different color jigs as the crappie bite seemed slow. I've got jigs in two or three places on the boat and...I can't find them. Well...I guess I moved them. Let's look in here...no jigs. Ok...I can't seem to find a big plastic bag with opened and unopened Bobby Garland Baby Shad...Slab Slayers...Split Tails...Slab Dockt'Rs ...Yum Wooly Beavertails...Yum Wooly Bees...Lake Ford Shad... a pack of 100 1/24 oz. unopened jig heads I ordered on E-Bay recently, etc. I just put them on the boat days ago after being at the house for a long time. I start looking around closer...my two Plano plastic storage boxes under my tackle box - are gone. They are full of crankbaits - spinnerbaits - chatterbaits - plastic worms - bass jigs - more crappie jigs - many jig heads, etc. I haven't quite run the full inventory through my mind yet. Deb and I are very puzzled. Did we move everything to the pontoon for some reason ? Do you remember doing this or that with them ? Why would someone just steal lures and jigs when I have a portable Lowrance Elite-5 fishfinder on the boat...4 fishing rods... a tackle box just packed full of bass lures...3 reels in a compartment where they found the bag of jigs, etc. ? It made no sense.
I look and look and find two more crappie jigs in the bottom of my tackle box. That's it ! I have 5 total crappie jigs in the boat. Deb said don't you want to go back to the pontoon now and check to see if someone has taken everything for sure ? I just said no...let's fish with what we've got. They are either somewhere else somehow or they are just gone...stolen. I didn't want to go and check it out just to be heartsick when my worst fears were realized. I said this is why I go fishing...to forget about the bills in the mailbox and to get away from the day to day problems that you have to deal with sometimes. We can check later. We left the creek as our crappie were on the small side and fished the bay for a few hours. Fishing was slow overall but considering we had 5 jigs to choose from I thought we did great. We caught 14 more crappie...2 yellow bass...a bluegill and a bream. I caught a variety of fish on a Panfish Assassin Curly Tail grub. The fish we found in the bay were in 12-17 feet today. We found one hot spot on a drop-off next to a point. The water level took another nose dive since Sunday and the fishing should get much better when it finally levels out in the future. We caught one last crappie near the mouth of the HBSP marina slough and decided to go in and after checking every "nook and cranny" on the pontoon we found out...yup, we wuz robbed. The docks there have a security code to get in but I'm sure those numbers get around from person to person. I don't know if it was from someone on another boat on the dock or what ? I peeked my head in the office door while I was leaving and told them what happened and the Ranger asked me if I wanted to make a report ? I thought for a second and said, well...I guess. It seemed strange making a report about jigs and lures but I did anyway. They thought that it could have been done by a boat that pulled up next to mine at night but I thought...ugh ? - no way...and not get the fishfinder and rods, etc. ( one was my Fat Albert rod ). I also had a quite a bit of stuff on the pontoon and none of it was touched. I don't know what the total amount of money is but it's quite a bit. I had about 20 unopened jig packs with a ton of expensive bass lures. I'm sure I'll remember more stuff later.
It's the principal of the theft and just the stealing of jigs and lures that blows my mind ? I'm just incredibly thankful that all of my fishing gear and equipment wasn't taken. It was like a personal attack on my fishing ! Let's take all of the lures and jigs so Jeff and Deb can't fish ! Whoever took them I just hope you have tons of fun with all of those jigs and bass lures...'ya little jerks. I took most everything else off my boat when I left today in case they came back looking for more. I've been at the HBSP marina for 8 years and this is the first time I've had something like this happen. You don't give it much thought until something like this does happen. I'm not going to let it bother me...I'm just gonna have to buy more fishin' stuff. A few pics...
