Felt sorry for the old man (my age) Ben Hayes. They pre fished Thursday night for the CBA and found the fish. Came last night with their "A" game ready to play in the CBA. Brought ice, juvi and slim builder for the fish to go in the live wells. Had a really good night and came in with nearly 20 lbs. emoApplause BUT!!!! For what ever reason the fish had some problems. Best they could tell everything was working correctly however after six hours two of their fish died in the well. emoBooHoo Hated to do it but had to hit them with a pound penalty for two dead and it knocked them out of the money with just under 19 lbs. emoBawl Sometimes it is just not meant to be. Two night of no sleep, $120 on entry fee and messed up their week this week not being able to sleep. Good thing is they will end up with some great points for the top fifty race but after 12 hours and would be in the money that has got to be a killer right there. emoDoh Jmax

Bummer! Sad to come in with a good weight of fish and lose a couple. Would water temp's have played a part in the demise of the fish?

I asked Ben about it and he said the water was iced and still cold. No telling. He was at a loss as to why two died so early. :( He did say something about having gas issues and it being worked on, thought maybe somehow gas may have got in the live well but he really did not know. I have been there and done that. Had everything in place, thought I was prepared as I could be, did the tournament, had a check, then lost it because of one dying. emoDoh

I have thought before about shock. If the water is too cold does it hamper the fish when they come out of fairly hot water into very cold water? I know I have seen some just roll over when they go from fairly hot water, to cold water in the live well and then back to hot water at the weigh in. That is one issue that I believe many tournaments have during the hot summer months. If you release fish right on the bank into hot bank water just a foot or two deep those poor fish go from cold iced water to hot bank water. That is one reason I like HBSP more then Chester. If you walk out to the end of the boat pier at HBSP it is fairly deep there and the fish can go deeper into grass right off. emoThumbsup I wished we had a release dock at the CBA weigh in building that went out a ways to deeper water. yea it does suck jmax, no we had 20.27 pounds. would have been good for fourth but nocked us to 19.27 after the penalty. it does stink bad. i just dont understand the long period of time they were alive. then they just were dead withing 30 min. we got to do something figure something out. it just put a damper on what seemed to be a decent bag on a tougher night, but after seeing a 30 and a 27 pound bag my thoughts on a tough night were changed.

Have Triton Max-air recirc system. Added a Power Bubbles aerator to the side we put 3 fish in in a 5 fish tourney. I was sick! When I checked them 30-45 min. earlier, 2 of the fish almost jumped out of the well on me!

Standard recircualtion should be fine. When you say power bubbles, are you talking about the oxygenator type. The oxygenator type aeration systems can producer chlorine when salt or release additives that contain salt are used. If this is the case or for those who do not know, this can be deadly for your fish.

Good info FishinMagician. I have never tried any additives myself. All I do is keep the water cool with non-chlorinated ice from my freezer at home which is filtered the same as the drinking water so it might have a small amount of chlorine still. As soon as I put the first fish in the livewell I run the recirculating pump on manual for the duration of the tournament. I try to keep the fish with its head pointed at the nozzle and they just swim in place right there. If the water looks to be murky or I'm getting foam I empty half of the water and re-fill the livewell with some fresh water and re-ice as needed. This has worked for me the last 3 years of tournament fishing.

FM is right. You must use the U2 formula(blue color) if using the Oxygenator. It has no salt additives and is their brand. We use the oxygenator and have never used ice to cool the water. The fish were jumping out of the weigh in bag after the 12 hour night tx.
