One problem................if they did devise a playoff system, they would have to have BCS title games that involve 2 teams from the same conference.............this year, if they did the playoff system with the top 6 teams, Georgia and LSU would play for the title, if you believe that the SEC is the strongest conference, with the strongest teams. That's what the BCS is against. Year in and year out, the SEC's biggest problem is that we beat the crap out of one another each year, and that is what makes it so hard for any team to go 12-0 in the SEC.
I believe that UGA should be playing for the title, and here's why. Richt made the point of the year by saying, "They (being the BCS cronies) ranked us at #4, knowing that we weren't playing for the conference title. Yet, they still ranked us at #4." Now, if you follow the the way things have went, when #1 has fallen, #2 steps up to #1. Or when #2 falls, the #3 team moves up to #2. This is the only week that this system hasn't happened. You have UGA falling down one spot, and you have a 2-week idle team in OSU moving up. UGA was only idle for 1 week. In all honesty, Missouri did not deserve to be at #1, but that's just the way the motions were happening to fall. They were the next in line, therefore, they moved up. In all honesty, WVU deserved to be #1, but they weren't. Both of them fall, so the next two should step up, which would have been OSU and UGA. But, that didn't happen.
LSU had injuries, which they overcame to win the SEC. Dorsey being out is a huge loss on their D line. He should be 100% by game time, which is going to be a huge plus for LSU. They should have Matt Flynn back, but having a dual-QB system in place, having Perrilloux as a starter isn't going to be too bad for LSU, if Flynn isn't 100%. So, if you all say that UT should have won the SEC, that must mean that they are a weaker team, because they couldn't defeat an LSU team that was pushing, at best, 85% healthy. And this is coming from me, the football fan, and not the UT hater. Sure, I poked fun at UT for the loss, but the truth is that they were beaten. LSU didn't hand them the game. They, as a unit, could not come together and defeat LSU. Placing the blame on Ainge, Fulmer, etc., is not going to do any good. Football is a TEAM sport. If it were just for individuals, then it wouldn't be the same sport. The team lost.
UGA is co-champion of the SEC East. The only reason that UT won the tie-breaker was due to the head-to-head win over UGA. However, if the SEC would throw that little rule out, UGA should have won the East. Having the head-to-head is a convienent way of letting one team off. Personally, I agree with a co-worker of mine. If it comes down to a tie-breaker like that, have a playoff game to determine a true champion for each division. In the GHSA, in Class A, Region 2-A was subdivided. #1 from side A played #4 from side B, and so forth and so on. Now, letting them have a playoff like that wouldn't make sense, because then you could be letting a #3 team be the champion for each division. However, in the case of any kind of tie-breaker situation, throw out all the cute little rules for letting a team slide, and have a playoff game. And yes, I would say this even if UGA had won the East.
This is the kind of year that shows that the current BCS system is not working. 8 #2 fall in the span of 15 weeks of football, and 5 or 6 #1 teams fall. Two of those were LSU, and both happened in 3 OT.
This is coming from me, but I honestly feel that college football's current season is too short. Have a playoff system among the top 8 teams. That will add an additional 7 games. For the teams that are #9-#25, assign the bowl games, etc. The only problem that would occur, though, would be the colleges that lose in the playoff format crying that they are losing money by not remaining in the playoffs, and therefore, it's not fair to have a playoff system. Ok, if that's going to be the case, then have bowl games for the losers in the playoffs, with the National Title game being between the two teams that come out at the end. You still have the BCS in tact and you have a tangible system for determining a rightful National Title team.
So, with this being said, let's see how this year would play out, in my eyes.
#1 OSU
#2 LSU
#3 Va Tech
#4 OK
#5 UGA
#6 Missouri
#7 USC
#8 Kansas
#1 and #2 have byes.
Va Tech vs OK = Va Tech
UGA vs Mizz = UGA
USC vs Kansas = USC
#2, #3, and #4 have byes.
OSU vs LSU = LSU
-----------------------
LSU vs Va Tech = Va Tech
UGA vs USC = UGA
National Championship = UGA vs Va Tech = UGA
Remaining bowl games:
LSU vs USC
Mizz vs Kansas
OSU vs OK
