Well, the partner that's carried me through the first 3 cff tournaments, my son, Pete Jr. (FirstLight) was in Florida chasing trout and redfish. His designated sub couldn't make it, so I had to go it alone.
Honestly, I hadn't fished lower Nick in decades and did no pre-fishing. My plan was to fish around bridges and rip-rap and maybe find some grass. By noon all I had caught was 4 slicks. I tried to find some grass, but only ran aground a couple of times. Then I tried what I thought would be the worst pattern at this time for largemouth--deep channel banks with a flow of about 90,000cfs.
Caught a decent spot right away, then a barely keeper LM, then a barely keeper spot, great, I had a limit of keepers! Got a better LM and culled the smaller spot. So, I finished with 5.6 pounds, way down in the standings, but, after the start I had, satisfying. Icing on the cake was my 1 pound spot got the big fish prize for its category, it was the only spot that was weighed in.
You saw the comments about launching and the dock in some other posts. One side of the small dock was occupied with the trimmed up motor sticking out past the dock. The other side of the dock was not useable because tying up there would have blocked the ramp. Launching solo was kinda dicy with all that and the wind. So, I tied up to the end of the dock just long enough to park my car and trailer hoping that the exposed propeller on the parked boat would not bang into the side of my boat too much.
I want to thank the committee for their efforts, their job can be tough at times as evidenced by some of the comments and rough language.
I wish the participants would give some info on patterns and lures instead of "my first spot, my second spot, etc . Just reminded myself, I caught all my fish on a plastic craw.
