What's the difference in SD and HD on the cards? And are cards specific to Bird and Lowrance? Or are they interchangeable?

Are you looking at the Navionics cards or just SD cards in general? Normally the SD cards are an older technology. The SDHC (high capacity) is a newer technology and some equipment won't read them.

If you're talking about the cards from Navionics, they have a compatibility chart. Just look up the series you're interested in (Platinum, Premium, etc.) and it'll tell you if its compatible with your unit. For example, I wanted to buy the Platinum series but it isn't compatible with my HB 798 so I had to settle for the Premium series.

I just got an HDS 7 and want a good map card for it. I'm looking around for used deals so I'm wondering what to be looking for.

Looks like Platinum, Premium, and HotMaps are all compatible. Looks like Platinum has 3D mapping. I think Plat n Prem include free PC software so you can pre-plan but you may want to give them a call to confirm.
