I bought my wife a new gas grill for Christmas. I was told the install would be $99 since I already have an existing natural gas line to the location. That was upped to $169 when we learned they couldn't install under patio roof and would have to pour a small concrete pad.

Today the installer tells us our existing gas line is too small; therefore grill will not get as hot as it should. Size of gas line was NEVER mentioned during sales pitch.

Says it will cost about $500 for the new natural gas line, plus the cost of renting a trencher.

That sounds absolutely absurd to me, especially since that possibility was NEVER mentioned when I got the sales pitch. Give me some feedback... is it reasonable or should I tell 'em to take their grill and installation plans and go away.

Only reason I bought expensive grill is to get permanent install of a quality grill. Otherwise I could have bought the standard propane from Lowes or Home Depot.

Give them the grill back, get your money and run. No way that should cost half that much money. I bet you a cup of coffee I can tell you exactly who you bought the grill from too.

Richard, the size of the gas line should not matter as the regulator on the grill should take care of that, however I would give them the whole thing back and go with propane tank type grill.

I agree with the rest of the replies. My parents have a grill hooked to the gas line and it is super convenient, but, in my opinion not orth the extra cost. Plus, natural gas does not get as hot as propane. So, if you are like me and really like to sear your steaks and burgers, the propane will be better. I have a 5 burner Vermont Castings propane. Even during the summer when we grill out almost 4-5 nights a week, the propane still lasts about 1- 1.5 months. I also bought an extra tank to have just in case or to hook to the turke fryer.

Take that grill and return it. If you can get a good deal on Vermont Casting or Weber, get it!! They are the only grills I would buy. I just retired my Weber that my parents gave me, it was 17 years old!! No Charbroil will last that long.

Good luck!

Sounds like a call to Calvin is in order. There is no telling how many folks they have ripped off. Chattanooga Gas might have some concern if they are messing with thier meters as well.

The reason size of gas line probably was not mentioned is b/c if the gas line was already there it would be assumed that the people who ran it in the 1st place did it correctly. Gas line is sized by the lenght of the run, so the longer the run is the bigger the line must be. If it is undersized pressure will not be correct. What happened was unforseen and could not have been determined without inspecting the gas line before hand..I hate what happened to you Richard but I am sure if you just wanted to return the product they will take care of you. Everyone here is just jumping on and thinking he got ripped off without knowing any of the facts. Bottom line is the people who put the gas line in in the 1st place were not qualified and probably should have not done the job.. Richard PM like i told you and I will do my best to help you in anyway possible.

if you wont a nice grill go to fines gas app in ftoglethorpe ga its close to lj silvers talk to john fine tell him mark parrish sent u he is a great guy

Maybe the line is too small. I seriously doubt it but it is possible if it has been run for a couple hundred feet. Even if the line was too small $500 is highway robbery to change it. Especially after the other "hidden" charges.

Richard, get your money back and buy a Primo and put it on the patio or wherever you want it, it will last untill the end of time.

I'm a retired master plumber and master gas fitter. I would hook it up temp with a rubber air line hose and see if you like the results. If you do, have it piped in permanently. Of course this assumes you can return a grill that has been test fired.

Two pipe-to-hose adapters, a piece of 3/8 air hose and two hose clamps is all you need for the test.

I've been running a smoker and a gas grill on the patio, and a 30,000 btu heater and a 15,000 btu heater inside the house for the last 13 years with 3/8" red rubber air hose.

I'd be happy to help you test is if you want to go that route. PM me or call 240-1631

The line size is determind by the BTU of the appliance. The appliace will have a gas valve to regulate the pressure. Natural gas should be 5 inches of water colum and the valve should bring it down to 3 inches. Must be a beast of a grill if you have to change line size.

I know the feeling richard. I took my do to get shot and bath and 7 nights bording and nomally the bill would have been $250.00 but when I call to check the price I was told my bill was $468.00. I hit the roof. I asked was the bath not 25.00 like normal, no it was $65.00 for grooming. There were other line items that were unauthorized and I told them the same thing. I was not told the normal stay and bath "not grooming" and shot had more than doubled. Richard get your money back and get you something else. They are trying to rip you off.
