Dad and I fished today in his '90 Javelin, 175 Evinrude. Coming up the river, the engine starts trimming out! tops out and won't stop. Sometimes the front switch or the engine switch will stop it, sometimes not! It'll trim out to the top just driving down the road! What is wrong? Switch bad or did it get wet?

have had the same thing happen to me in a TX on a rainy day. Moisture in the front trim switch was the culprit. Replaced the switch and have had no more problems. Hope this helps.

Take the switch loose and spray it down with WD-40, you have a short, probably rust and corrosion in the switch.

Suggest replace the front switch and put a boot on it. The covers are cheap. The are about a $1.25 for the boot and the switch is about $12 or so and is most common but you have 3 other suspects also. Without knowing which one I suggest if it does it often is to unplugg the front switch (pull center wire off and tape it up) and see if it still does is, then possibly the engine switch (just unplugg it). Then if you have switches on the steering wheel and shifter that are 2 more possibilitys. Most of the time the OMC shifter switch has a connector that be unplugged easily. Have had those do it also. The good thing is if you have them on the steering whel you really don't need the one on the shifter.

I had a friend that trim motor burn up like that. They are suppose to have thermal switchs in them to keep them from doing it. He came home and found his engine all the way up and the wiring completly melted all the way to the relays. He swore the neghbor kid had been playing with the trim. He was about to go get his dad and just let it go. I put a new motor on it for him and as soon as I plugged it up it started going up. Found the front switch was full of water. New switch and boot and all was fine. Just a thought.
