Hello everybody, I'm Josh holder and new to the forum style so bear with me. I have a 2000 triton tr20 w/ a 2004 Yamaha Vmax 3.1 L 200 HP and having some problems. I went fishing today and stopped to fish. When I went to leave the motor would not crank. Just turn over as if the kill switch was unhooked. I checked over everything So I trolled back to truck. Once I got home I Hooked the muffs up and it fired right up as if nothing was wrong. So I took it back down to the water and ran it for about half an hour with no problem. I stopped at another spot and fished for about an hour, went to leave and the same thing happened again. Spin and spin but won't even hit. Had to get towed back to truck. When I got her on trailer it cranked right up! Ain't got a clue somebody please give some insight. I replaced all three LP, put a brand new prime pump bubble and still screwed up. Please help

I have a 2002 150hp VMax that performs the same frustrating trick. It cranks fine the first time in the morning but then after fishing for a while it won't start. It turns over fine but will not start. I have taken it to the mechanic and they find nothing wrong and cannot duplicate it. Do you have a hot foot? What I have to do is give it gas like an old carberated car. It will finally sputter to life but I have to keep a little gas to it so I can get it in gear. Be careful not to have the rpms too high when you shift into forward. The teeth will grind. If you don't have a hot foot then use the shift throttle to do the same. If you ever find the root cause let us know. Hope this trick will work for you. It'll smoke a little doing it but it works for me. Good luck.

Same thing with my VMAX 150. Sometimes start in a second, other times its taking 10 times. Not a good feeling while your up the lake. It's never "not" started, just takes a while sometimes. I have been to two different dealers. The second dealer took of the ECM harness because he said the connector was corroded. He files the contacts and it was good for about 4 months, now it's doing the same thing. Going to check that connector again. Have run out of mechanics..

I had a 225 Johnson do the same thing , start up fine first thing in the morning but after I fished my first spot of the day it would not start so I would fish about another hour and try starting it again it would finally start. I noticed when I was trying to start it that my depth finder would reboot its self so I started watching all my electronics and they where also losing power while I was cranking the engine so I figured if I was not getting power to my electronic I was not getting power to power pack . so first thing I did was used my trolling motor battery to crank the engine and that solved the problem so I bought a new cranking battery.

A fairly cheap item to check is your primer bulb, especially for an older boat. The spring can weaken and allow fuel to drain back in the tank. Had that happen to me on another boat. If you ever find out whats wrong with yours, message me. I am still troubleshooting mine...and the mystery won't start all the time issue. All my compression numbers are fine, I can see fuel entering the fuel bowls. I am going to take off and clean relays and connections in the hopes I have a loose or corroded one.

I've replaced the primer bulb, b changed all three LP's, and I'm dumb founded. A few people that have close to the same problems tell me that they already see the gas going into the motor through the filter and as soon as I put in the water it'll work just great then I'll move to another spot and won't do nothing except turn over but won't fire and can't get gas to flow from the tank even with my new primer bulb. This sucks but keep the ideas coming and hopefully someone will finally figure out what's up with all our motors.

This may sound stupid but at least it's an idea-----

I've had car motors do the same thing and it was the coil, would not dare start when it got hot but once it cooled down it would fire right up..

An ignition switch will fail intermittently. Even if you hear fuel pump turn on and pressurize system, there may be a separate pole and wire from switch to ignition. The turning of the key will clean the contacts till the corrosion (green mess) will finally get so thick, it will completely fail. You generally get little warnings but they're easy to ignore

as Rod said, coils going bad will cause similar problems to yours. Electrical components aren't always good or bad

Have you pulled your plugs? Do you have old ones put up to compare to? Doubt that plugs are your issue but you might learn something, taking a little peek.

Bad connections one boat are common and the lowly, often neglected ground is the worst culprit. Get some good contact cleaner and after spraying both sides of plug together connectors, dielectric grease them. Scotch brite all your terminal rings or replace if not soldered. Having crimped connections on a boat is the same as bending over to get soap in a prison shower, sooner or later, you're

Did any of you guys ever find out why and finally get it fixed? I really hope and pray one of y'all did. Please write me or post on this page and let me yes you fixed or even if you didn't fix it you may have tried other things I've tried and vice versa.
Thank you guys,
Josh

That motor has two fuel filters. It has the regular cylinder type that is visible and it also has a filter inside the VST. Chris Carsons Marine and Hydro Tec Marine are both very good with Yamaha engines so may want to get in touch with them and see what they say. Wayne and Matt at Hydro Tec are very good guys to work with.
