I know this is a fishing forum but the AC in my 02 Xterra which pulls my boat to the ramp emoCool needs some help. I notice when it started getting hot outside that the AC was weak so I took it to a local shop. He vacuum the system, leak check, lubed and put two pounds (maybe, I'm guessing on that one ) 134 in. Its hot out today and the ac never did get real cold, it stayed cool but not like i like it...Need some help what can I check ?

You may want to have your thermal expansion valve checked. They can get clogged or corrode and quit working completely. When that happens you'll lose efficiency and you may notice your compressor continuously kicking off and on.

Try adding some R134A again. Buy a charging kit at Wal-Mart or an auto parts store (around $20.00) and follow the instructions. (It's very easy, my girlfriend does it to her car all the time.)

Some kits have dye in them to help spot the leaks. Some have Stop Leak. I haven't found either one very useful.

If adding R134A helps then you still have a leak. If it doesn't help you have mechanical problems.

Most vehicle ac systems put out 45 degree air when they're working right. You can stick one of those long stem dial type thermometers in one of your vents and monitor what's going on as you drive.

Hangnmoss might have the best answer right there, either that or your reciever dryer is stopped up. What ever you do DO NOT but any stop leak in the a/c system. Will cause more problems that it can help.

Does it get cold when you first turn on the a/c but once you start driving it gets warmer?

Next time you have your hood open and turn the a/c on, you should see the Dryer/Accumulator, it looks like a silver can with lines on it. If that can never gets cold it may be the Compressor itself. I have seen brand new A/C compressors not work right.

I would take it to another shop or the same shop and have them put it on a set of guages and check the head pressure and that can give the tech an idea of what the problem was. If I had a can of R134 I would check it for you, but I dont have a big can any more.
