there Tailgate! You have come to the right place! If you will keep watching and asking questions here, you will get all the info you need.

Questions?

What kind of fish are you going to target?

Where do you live?

What kind of boat are you fishing out of?

These will help some of the "pros" on here give you better advice on locations and techniches. Above all have fun!

Tell me where you are at or where you want to start from. I live on "river road" across from the "shields bar" light. My best lures; watermelon or pumpkin worms Carolina rigged or shaky heads. My best crankbaits; sun lavender (white/purple) deep little N or a XPS splatter back. Best Jigs; black/blue or white with corresponding trailers. I can help you out more and give you some spots if you answer the first question. I mainly fish from Thief neck up to Emory.

Flippen*1 - 8/3/2007 2:14 PM You aint startin out on the easiest of lakes either, might want to try Chickamauga instead. Good luck.

Hence, why I was asking him where he lived to better determine if driving to Chik would be an option. Just from the reports i have read, Watts seems to be a harder lake to fish, even fo rguys that do it all the time.

There`s nothin` wrong with Watts Bar....it`s like any other mainstream lake....current plays a factor at times and you just have to put in the time to figure it out a little bit.
I would think that it might be a little easier for a new fisherman to learn how to use the various lures with out having to deal with a lot of weeds. Yes...yes the weeds are a great thing for a bass fishery and I love to fish Chic and do every chance I get. But what I`ve found is that about 75% of the weeds don`t hold fish. It`s not like 15 years ago when the lake had all the milfoil and hydrilla....back then all you had to do was find a clump and you could catch fish.
For a new fisherman trying to figure out which type of weed might hold fish it might be frustrating plus it might be hard to tell when your getting a bite or just hung in the grass.
Tailgate.. some things the guys have suggested should get you started ...I would add a texas rig worm and right now fish it SLOW and DEEP on point or Humps or big trees that have fallen over onto the water.
If you`ll throw the t-rig along the banks early in the day you should get enough bites to get a feel for how a bite feels before you go deep....but 15-35 ft right now will probably hold the bigger fish.
Fuzzy can probably help you more than most...he fishes a lot and knows how to fish the Bar.
Once you get the feel for your different baits the Chic is an excellent place to fish also....
You can get a map for both lakes at wallyworld and other place and if you`ll study it a little it is a big help in locating good fishing spots.

Went this morning and scoped fish at 45 feet deep! Never caught a one that deep, but plenty of bank runners up to 15 inches from Shields bar, Island across from Shields bar, Silo down a little up from Rockwood launch and caught on at Bayside marina. Need to concentrate deep if fishing in the day...

You would probably have better luck with numbers of fish below the Watts Bar dam, in the river, and below Chickamauga dam, throw a white or chartreuse 5/8 oz willow leaf spinner bait to cover that breaks the current, logs, rocks, barge tie ups, bridge piers,or cuts in the bank where a eddy forms. try slow then if slow don't work the rip it so the blades run just under the surface making a v wake. Also a rebel pop-r or similar baits in same areas.
If those don't produce, slow it down and try a small white or chartreuse marabou 1/8oz -1/4oz crappie jig on light 6-8 lb line, in those areas , let it settle down just enuff so that you cant see it ... just real slowly 5 or 10 feet let it settle down again and repeat.
Another trick is a 6-8" plastic worm heavy thick stubby worm like a trick worm, rigged weedless with a small split shot 18 inches above worm on light line 8-10 lb line.
Another trick is drift a plastic lizard Carolina style , with a barrel sinker just big enuff to let weight just occasionally bounce across the bottom, between the channel marker buoys, where the old river channel breaks off in to deeper water, try to keep the drifted worm just on the top edge of the break, Ive landed many 3-6 lb Smallmouths this way late summer to early fall.
