I'm looking for some new chokes for my remington 870 exp. 12 ga. I'm wanting a full and a improved cyl. choke. I've done a lot of shopping around, but again, as new as I am to the hunting thing and such, I dont know if there is a superior brand or whatever. So, what's yalls picks and preferences on brands for this? Thanks--FF

Any brand will work. Unless you are doing some very specialized shooting, Remington brand is just as good as any. Hastings, Carolson's, or any other will do fine as well.

My experience is: you get what you pay for. I mostly shoot extra full for gobblers with my gun and I have really enjoyed my Kicks Gobblin thunder. It cost almost as much as what I paid for the gun used!

It really depends on what you are going to be hunting and what kind of shot you will be using. General hunting with lead shot, rabbit squirrels and such the Reminggton tubes work fine and can be purchased many places. Ducks and Geese, Steel shot takes diffrent tubes genarally, although M and IC will work, never shoot Steel in factory Full or tighter tubes. Tungesten based shot products usually require the more open chokes to perform there best, with a few exceptions for Turkey hunting. Turkeys and Lead shot, there are a myraid of choices with restrictions and wad displacement tubes, but the factory remington X full and Super full work well for the money.

What do you plan on doing with your new 870?

Mallard, I recently went quail and chukar hunting. I had a blast- I imagine for the time being I'll stick to that, and throw in dove and pheasant hunting- I may try turkey hunting down the line. But for the time being, I'll stick to the smaller game birds. The gun came with a modified choke, so that's what I used for the quail and chukar. It worked fine for what I needed it to do. I just want to go ahead and be prepared for other game birds by getting some new chokes, so I dont have to run around and go find me the right ones when I need them... plus, I've got some gift cards I need to spend- so I figured I'd use that to take care of those things.

If you are primarily doing the upland hunting, get you some factory tubes in Improved Cylinder, Full, and Improved Modified. One thing I recommend for wing shooting is patterning your new gun. Get you some paper some diffrent brand and size shotshells and get out there and pattern all of those diffrent chokes and find which one works best with what load out of your gun. You will also learn alot about how a shotgun pattern works, I still learn something everytime I shoot patterns. Enjoy your new gun and be Safe.

Thanks Mallard, that's a good idea. I'll try to get out there and find out what works well. I appreciate everybody's input. :)
