I am a new member and enjoy reviewing all the tips and comments about fishing. I fish for all species but my favorite are Northern Pike and Steelhead Trout.

I have a website dedicated to pike fishing if any are interested:

Thanks

Stan

To CFF from Doc1, hope you can get some information your type fishing on here, your type fish aren't in the south but we have some trout fishermen on here that might be able to help you.

Like I said, I enjoy fishing for all species. I saw CCF on another website and since I have interest in traveling south for some good fishing, thought I would join CCF for tips and possible locations.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

Welcome to CFF...

If you mention a trip here and ask for a backseat, I can assure you the offers will abound. We get a little cantankerous when the weather gets cold and we tend to stay indoors, but most if not all here are good people, and the ones I've met are more a blessing than they will ever know!

Also, Please post your trips in the fishing reports forum as I know several of us would be interested in knowing how to go after some of those great Northern species if we get up that way some day.

In 2007 my son and I fished Flint Lake near Longlac, Ontario, Canada. The only access is off Klotz Lake and down two sets of rapids. We both get out of the boat and float it down stern first, one of us at the bow with 100 feet of 1/2 inch line, the other guiding it down at the stern by hand, both of us in waders.

A fun trip, but coming back up against the current at weeks end takes all our strength.

We stayed in a cabin, the only one on the lake. We caught 116 pike and 6 walleye on barbless hooks and returned to the water unharmed. The largest pike went 42 inches and about 22 lbs. This is an estimate based on the length of the leader we were using.

The big pike went berserk at boat side and snapped our 10 lb test line. I was able to snap a picture on which we based our estimate. The remainder of the pike went 5 to 12 lbs with a couple little ones thrown in. Our mistake was not to play the big one more to tire him before he could see the boat. I do like it when the fish humbles you by reminding you how inadequate your technique is.

Needless to say, we are returning in 2008. Longlac is about 980 miles from Cleveland Ohio, quite a trek.

Might be fun to go south and fish for stripers. Any recommendations?

Right now recovering from a hip replacement and dreaming of summer fishing. Otherwise I would be in the streams off Lake Erie after the Steelhead.

pikemaven, where up north are you from? I didn't catch that . I saw where you said something about Cleveland. Do let us know if you are in the area. We can find you a boat to share. We'd be interested in how you do what you do on the lake and any tactics that you use that might be useful down here. There are many good places to catch stripers down here in the South. It's great to have people from other parts of the country that can contribute to our forum.

emoWelcome You know Wis. and MN have some dandy Northern fishing don't you? And save you about 8+ hr drive... You should post some pics of your large catches of Northerns. I just moved here last June from Minneapolis and these guys down here LOVE to see the variety of fish from other areas around the country. As do I. Making me want to go scour the folders on my other computer to look for some big northerns.
So by all means, go to Search at the top and read on how to post pics. Then post some of those hawg Northerns. I've been schooled by a few.... emoEek last big one I had on, ripped my drag out on a Shimano. Love a good northern while pluggin' for bass. Keeps you on your toes.

Pictures of Northern are on my website http://pikemaven.googlepages.com

Meanwhile, I will learn how to post them here.

Yep, I am from Cleveland OH.

I feel like I have known you guys for years, thank you for the friendly welcome. If ever in the Cleveland area, let me know. Always like new company while fishing.

Why come to Cleveland OH?

Lake Erie is the walleye capitol of the world. An added plus, you just might hook into a steelhead in the lake too. Lake Erie also very good for small mouth bass.

Muskie fishing nearby. Other than that......hmm, Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, and the Cavaliers, with Lebron James.

If you are into culture, a great Natural History and Art Museum as well as world renown Cleveland Orchestra. Not to mention the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, The Great Lakes Science Center, the Cleveland Zoo, and NASA's Lewis Research Center.

Also world class medical care at the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals. Folk come here from all over the world for the health care.

Just don't come in the winter unless you like gray skies and cold. Although the steelhead are in the streams now, if it weren't for my brand new hip, I would be after them.

You know you live in Ohio if you can cast a spinning reel while wearing mittens. <grin>

Tight Lines to all,

Stan

Culture? Spinning rods? Mittens? Nahh...not this guy !
