Just to add to my sting of bad luck. So I bought this boat off the internet from a guy in N.C. (1st mistake). Seemed like a nice guy, fishes the B.A.S.S. Southern Opens so his stuff has to work and be in good shape in order to get $ I figured. He bought a new Skeeter so I bought his 1996 Javelin. Anway, I took the boat out a grand total of 3 times, running it very little as it was tempermental to start and run. I took the boat into the shop and the tech. called me on Tues. to say that one of the cylinders is scratched on the inside, another one is messed up pretty good and the compression is erratic. Means little to me as I'm a doofus technically speaking. He advises that I get a new motor. This one is a 1995 150 hp. Evinrude that I thought may have had a gas bulb issue. Turns out to be worse after all. I've got a club tourney I'm committed to this Saturday on Watts Bar so I ask what can be done to get me on the H2O. He suggests that I let him replace the rings and that would be a band aid fix that may last one time, three times, a month, two years, who knows? Bottom line- he recommends getting a new motor. I sank my $ in just getting the stupid tub of a boat now what? I have some $ in company stock that I can sell that would give me around $3000-$3500. Hate to sell that stuff and sink more in this boat. Where's a place I can check, maybe on-line even, for a used motor I guess. I've checked Nichols (all their stuff says sold, everything), Bunch Marine, Minors Marine, even Ebay. I found one on the C&O Marine site, but they're outside Nashville and I hate to go that far. Anyone got any suggestions other than pull the plug and get the insurance money for another one?emoRolleyes Another option would be to trade it to a dealer but that seems shady to me.

Did you ask what it would cost to bore it and sleeve it? You're wasting your money on rings if a wall is scratched. This is just an option worth asking about. They may not want to take the time to do this because they probably would have to send the block to someone else in town, but it could save you some money in the long run. I'd at least ask or take it to someone who is willing to shoot you straight on ALL options not just wanting to sell you a new motor.

Heck while there in there get them to bore it to 175ish. LOL

I agree with Minner a rebuild is a lot cheaper option if it is done right!!!!! You might want to call cleveland boat center or hiawasse marine CBC usually has a good selection of used motors if you choose to go that route..

I WENT TO BASS PRO IN ATLANTA IN 2003 AND THEY HAD A "NON-CURRENT INVENTORY HOT LIST" OF ENGINES ANYWHERE FROM 225'S TO 25 HP'S I GOT A 2000 MERC 175 EFI FOR $4500 YOU MAY CHECK THERE. HATE TO HEAR ABOUT ENGINE PROBLEMS BEEN THERE. GOOD LUCK!

i think if you only have 2 bad cyl. then i would look into having those two bored out to clean them up , if your going to pay the teardown labor to put rings in it , then you need to have the cyl taken care of , you will waste money ,if you have to pay teardown 2 times
i just did a 150 johnson and parts were in the 600 range and it needed a sleve and i had the rest of the cyl cleaned up .010 new pistons etc . i did the powerhead myself , (i worked on motors for a season a year ago) and there not as much to them as everybody thinks ..it helped that i am also an ASE mechanic .
its the labor rate that most marrine places get that hurts most folks !! i get dealer prices and dont mark up the parts
just my .02

There a place down here in Rock Spring GA. Homer has a 1996 Evinrude 150 setting in his floor, freshly rebuilt and looking for a new home. P.M. if you are interested

I had my 97 yamaha pro v 200 rebuilt in March by Dale at Nichols Engineering (Paul Nichols) in Soddy Daisy. Had two cylinders sleeved, 6 new pistons and rings and two rods. Cost less that $3k. Thought about getting a new one myself but couldn't afford it.

Call him and ask him what he thinks, probably not worth puting the money into it but will be less than a new one.
But after it's fixed, you still have a 12 year old motor.

His number is 423-451-0125

Good Luck!

Try Paul Graham in whitwell, his phone number is 423-658-5465, he works on evinrude johnson only, been doing it for years and does fine work.

Pretty sure that is the same Paul I used two years ago, but he got a regular job and quit working on boats this year. This guy was up on the mountain...
