Thats my point, all the crop-land around there is leased up or you cant afford the kings ransome to lease it. Stupid cranes aint worth all that outlay to me.

Don't you own a boat? You could anchor in the channel and have a group hunt. As long as you don't have the boat under power when you are shooting or use a trolling motor to gain an advantage. Might even take a rod and fish (crappie) between flocks.

I don't know, but some things are going to change if they allow hunts. The other thing is you could watch the flight patterns for a couple of days and just anchor outside the refuge but in the middle of the flight path. I would also have a discussion with the commissioner from your area. You might suggest this for the refuge to allow greater access for the hunts.

Hey Spur, those silly things aren't just over at the refuge! I have some family up in the Birchwood area and those things will be standing out in the pastures and fields! You could pull your car right up next to them, now when you start to get out they'll spook on 'ya! You don't need to just look for them at the refuge to hunt. They are kind of intimidating if you haven't seen one up close. They stand about 4 ft. tall, and the males have a dark red outline around the black raccoon looking eyes! Weird! But any where from the Benton side to Birchwood, Decatur,Charleston, Athens areas, they feed in those fields during the day and go back to roost at the refuge. I read another article that were referred to as the "Fillet Minion of the Sky" by one writer.

They are really good to eat. I've eaten them a couple times, and had to get seconds each time. If you know anyone headed out west for birds have them bag you one to try. I'm sure glad I'm not involved in that battle. The birders will have their perspective on it, and they are very active and well informed.

Spur..my son and a friend were duck hunting up around Watts Bar last week-end. He said he coulda shot a truck load of those noisy cranes. Public hunting area...TVA.

If they have a season Spur...give me a yell. I have a friend that has a farm right by the Hiwasee Refuge. It's one of those farms that TWRA have given them those explosive deals to scare them off.

The agriculture lands on HWY 27 from South of Dayton to Spring City had thousands of birds in them yesterday. If they are good to eat, I'd love to shoot one. if they taste like all the other water fowl I have eaten...no thanks!
