just out of curiousity what is it that everyone likes about those things? What makes them different than any other older reel?

IMO, they were the first easy to cast low profile baitcaster. They were considerable lighter than most other bc at the time. Very popular paired with a pistol grip rod. Early one's were made by Shimano, until they started making their own very similar Bantams. After that they were made by Ryobi. I am curious to what their retrieval rate is (inches per turn of the handle). I still have a lew's speed stick in the rod stack, not sure whatever happen to the reel.
