Fished Nick-a-jack this weekend. My client cancelled on me so I gave an old friend that has been battling cancer a call. My friend had taken me fishing several times in the past when I did not have a boat and was one of the many people that has added to my fishing knowledge and experience. I got live bait below the dam before we met which is standard for me I don’t want someone waiting around to catch bait when we should be fishing. The bait is super thick down below the dam. This may be another bad year for the striper bite below nick with all the bait. But getting bait right now is no problem. I threw the cast net one time and I filled up two bait tanks with enough bait to fish for two days. Put back on the trailer and went to meet my friend at Shellmound. He was there waiting on me rods in hand with that same old smile he’s always got. Our first stop was very productive we caught about a dozen or so fish. Most of the fish were 3 to 3 ½ lbs. I caught a 7lb 10oz monster Largemouth on the first stop just after a tournament fisherman moved off of a small point a few yards away. I think he was from a fishing club in Chattanooga scenic bass club or something like that. He had fished that spot for 20 or 25 minutes with a crank bait before moving on. He would probably have died if he knew that 5 minutes after he left I trolled up there and caught that fish. My friend kept me busy putting shad on and taking fish off. After fishing down some rip rap we headed to the next hole and the fish were stacked in there. My friend caught a nice 5lb 8oz Largmouth and I can’t tell you how many 3 and 4lb fish we caught out of there. I caught several nice spotted bass one was well over 4 ½ lbs. All the fish were heavy with shad hanging out of their mouths and some spitting up shad as we brought them into the boat. The bass on Nick have got the feed bag on. I don’t even want to venture a guess on how many fish we caught but My old friend had a good day and he has caught a lot of bass in his time. I did get a bonus fish up on the lake. I usually manage to get one every year. I got a good Striper on Sunday mrng 24 lb took me a little over 1hr. to get the fish in the boat. Light action rod and 8lb test line got tested out and we with stood the battle. My forearm looked like Popeye’s after the fight but I was glad to finally see the fish after I chased him all over the lake. I was afraid the hook would wallow out or the fish would pull off before I got to see him. Water Temp is 59 to 60 deg. F. There are two things that will guarantee you to catch lots of BIG FISH if you leave these two items at home (1) is the camera and (2) is the dip net. Luckily my friend brought his camera. Enjoy the photo’s

That was one nice lm! Thanks for the report on the shad situation. I had high hopes with the shad dieoff at Chic, that the nick would be better this year. Good job on the striper also.
