Besides the occasional sprinkle, it was actually a pretty nice day. We started out on shallow flats, but after an hour or so of constant slicks we moved a little deeper. After a few casts outside Mullens Cove, we found a group of quality bass in the 4'-6' depth range around submerged weeds. We headed downriver and fished the upstream end of Oates Island and found more keepers at the same depth. Our best five in a little under six hours weighed 14.9lbs. NRG's pattern from CFF4 was still effective today...if it looked like a sunfish, they bit it. Most of the better bass had been fanning, but at the depth we caught them I doubt they were on beds. All of the quality bass were caught on a Bomber Fat Free Shad in the Citrus Shad color and on a C-rigged Yum tube in green pumpkin/gold flake.

Clay, the areas in hot pink are where we caught the better bass. Sorry, I couldn't find a way to attach the pic in a PM. Good Luck!

Sorry man, I can't get the Google image under 100Kbs. Have you got a map? Look up the landmarks above and it will make sense.

Great info jason. I would have expected the better fish to be concentrated in areas like you had success in today. I tend to fish the really shallow flats in the spring and get a bunch of slicks too, mostly males, but I really think that the females spend most of their time out of the really skinny water and make short jaunts to the shallow water to check out beds and to spawn. My problem is I just like to catch a bunch of fish and fishing the edges of the flats in a little deeper water is just harder for me to get confidence in and I just like to catch a bunch of fish most of the time, so the slicks don't bother me. I wouldn't do well in tournaments unless I started to fish those edges more efficiently and get more confidence in that type of pattern. I just don't have the greatest confidence in fishing crank baits and most of the other baits you can't cover the water very quickly with. I am going to really concentrate on getting more fish on crankbaits this year and maybe I'll catch more quality fish.

that is close to where I got my keepers for CFF4. I got mine from the next island up and in the cove a little ways.

Hey Jason, that's about the best report I've seen on here. I haven't really fished too much on the outside edge of the island or Mullens Cove. I have caught several nice bass on the other island you pointed out. I can't wait for the grass to get going in the cove.

Hey Jason,
I agree that that was a great report. Thanks, buddy! You gotta love this internet. Could our grandfathers have even imagined that there would be an electronic medium where you could casually communicate with like minded people around the world, find info on any topic, share tips, and access images from freakin' space to aid in the process???
And as a rank newby I've gotta say a big thanks to all the vets who're sharing all this invaluable info here. I've learned more useful info in the past couple of months on this site than anywhere else. THANKS, Y'ALL...

I agree, satellite imaging is fantastic. I do wonder however if this same imaging will change when and where we all fish. I like to send images to folks but what I think is the most helpful is to take that info, look at the topo maps, get out there and see exactly what's out there with one's electronics and then find similar spots to check out. It may be that sharing such specific info will put some fish in some people's live well but those fish if they get hammered will move off and find somewhere close to stay and finding that spot will be the next step. I think that that is how the pros stay on fish, knowing what fishing pressure and weather will do to the fish that are in one place one day at one time and figuring out where they are when one is out on the water.

Madolinpicker, is that a king mackerel? I didn't think that they had those near Rossville.

jtf, on Friday the place you marked had at least five boats on it while we were on the edge of Mullens. Must be a hot-spot this time of year.

Polo Dog,
Yep, that's a King Mac in one hand and a Mahi Mahi in the other. Pulled them puppies outta Chickamauga creek on minnows. Actually those were a couple we got Gulf Stream trolling out of Calabash, N.C. last June. The main action was from Wahoo of which we got a couple of 70 pounders. We also got a nice Blue Fin. Plenty of Baracudas, too. Both of those fish made their ways into my belly!
