Fished Nickajack this morning at the crack of dawn with my father...Fish were biting most of the morning...Water was 47F and skies were cloudy....got there at the crack of dawn and the fish locator was FULL with fish .....in the first 30 min. we had 4 nice whitebass...we worked it till 10:30 and caught 9 in all...they will make a good fish fry....fish were on the bottom and hitting a yellow and red tube jig. Tried for some stripers but none were there to be had...a few other boats were fishing for Sauger but did not see anyone catch a thing.

Jeremy, Never tried White Bass before, do they have a red streak that you have to remove like a Striper? I'm going to cook a few next time I get into them. I have heard people talk about catching yellow bass, is this just a white bass with a yellow look?

They are different species and look very similar. I found a couple of sites earlier that told the diference but I think that the easiest way to tell them apart is similar telling spotted bass from LM bass and that is that spots and whities have rough patches on the tongue and LM's and yellows don't. There are other ways to tell but they take too much thinking in my estimation.

The white bass gets much larger than the yellow bass. Myself and "whenwegoin" have literally caught thousands of yellow bass over the years and I don't recall ever seeing one approach even 1lb. The REAL way to tell the yellow bass from the white is the way the yellow bass will flare its sharp gill plates as soon as you touch it anywhere. The white bass never does it. Be careful with kids handling yellow bass, the gill plates are like knife blades. Also the yellow will have a touch of yellow color in it. You can go just about anywhere on Chick and use a small jigging spoon and catch all you want.

Yep, I catch those little razor mouthed dudes alot too, but I didnt know they were a different species than the whites. You learn something new all the time on here, thanks for the info.

A TWRA OFFICER TOLD ME THEY TECHNICALLY CALLED A YELLOW BASS...AMD YEAH ...1/2 PONDER IS BIG AND I`VE SEEN PEOPLE PUT EM ON A STRINGER...CAN`T IMAGINE THERE`S MUCH MEAT.....ALL HEAD AND GILLS AND THEY THINK THEY`RE REAL MEAN....ATTITUDE LIKE A RED EYE !!

THEY THINK THE YELLOW PERCH IS THE CAT`S MEOW UP AROUND TOLEDO, OHIO ,LAKE ERIE...I RECKON THEY CATCH EM BY THE MILLIONS UP THERE AT CERTAIN TIMES OF THE YEAR....CHARTER BOAT EXCURSIONS FOR THEM....BIGGEST ONE I EVER CAUGHT AROUND HERE WAS PROBABLY LESS THAN 3/4 POUND

Ya, I like eating the whitebass. You can get some of the big females this time of year. When I fillet them and stripers or hybrids I just like to clean them by leaving about 1/8" of meat when I remove the skin. When you do that there is hardly any of the dark meat that tastes so "fishy." Caught all my fish in the "bay area" right there where you launch the boat.
