Headed out to Nickajack this evening. Pumped and ready to go and it did not dissapoint! Water temp. was 65F. All generators were running. Started to troll some various lures with nothing due to the fact there is lots of Hydra breaking loose all over the place. Could not keep any garbage off the lures. I had a friend with me and my 6 year old so I decided to get the old Rainbow Trout swim shad back out.
I worked the current jigging off the bottom and the first cast produced a nice fish...I handed the rod to my 6 year old and this one was had some shoulders. He struggled with the fish for a good 5 min..I did not want to holler at him, because the fish was probably a little smaller than him! We got the fish up to the boat and the line got hung on the bow and the fish got off. Probably around 15lbs..(a striper)
Made a couple more runs and had several hookups, but no fish...finally hooked another fish and it was a SAUGER. Now usually I catch them in FEB, when the water is in the 40's and 50's. The water is 65F so I was shocked! Anyone catch them in this warm of water? The fish was 16.5 in long so we kept him and I just got done eating him...VERY GOOD EATING!
I know there were more in there and that is what was bitting and getting off.
Made a few more runs and hooked another striper. This ended up being a hybrid because it had 2 patches on its tounge. I fought that fish for 10 minutes on the 12lbs test line (best guess is about 12 or 13 lbs). I love ultra-light gear and big stripers. A hybrid is much stronger than an striper in my opinion! Landed the fish and released him after the photo-oppertunity. All fish were hooked right before dark. All within a few feet off the bottom. Did not see any other boat catch anything...All the fish were right off the wing wall. At about 7pm all but one of the generators shut off and so did the fish..The big ones are there now!
