Fished a club tournament with the Cleveland Bassmasters on Nickajack yesterday. Ever had one of those days where things started so promising and ended with a whimper? Fished with fellow CFF Member jsb. The morning was foggy with a 5 mph wind. jsb fished a Spook and I started with a Ribbit Frog. A couple of blowups with the Spook but the frog wasn't speaking their language so I switched to a War Eagle spinnerbait and quickly landed 2 decent keepers. Both in about 6 ft of water. Hmmm....two keepers in the boat by 7 a.m., looks like a good day shaping up. We ran to a shallow slew that looked as if it was prime for a topwater bite. The numbers were there and a couple were close but no leepers. By then the sun was up and the bite slowed down. The rest of the day was spent fishing upriver. Again, numbers were there and jsb landed one nice keeper Spot but we couldn't find anything large. Thank God I remembered the sunscreen. I also went through 5 20 oz bottles of water and was still thirsty when I got home. Nickajack still remains one of my favorite lakes but it can be a temperate mistress. Thanks jsb for a good day. We didn't do great but the company was excellent.

At least it wasn't a total loss, though. Catching fish is better than not catching anything, and although the big-uns weren't there, at least you had a great day on the water with a friend. ;)
