Fished Nick-a-jack last Saturday night. Have not had time to write till now. Fished from 7-11pm. Kind of an evening trip that was unplanned. We had only planned to fish till dark but when the fish are biting it is hard to stop.
We started by trying for some Smallmouth. We jigged the bottom at the mouth of the Sequatchie River with no smallmouth but we did catch a 12lbs drum and a 3lb. catfish. We marked fish but no smallmouth. I was using a brown and black 1/4 oz. fuzzy grub jig. Got some large shiners and floated them as well with no hits.
Went below the dam after cast netting some Threadfins and bumped them off the bottom fishing straight down from the boat in the dark. Picked up three stripers in the 3-5 lbs. range. Not real big ones, but they were FISH! We had tried trolling with no luck and too many other boats in the water. The current had slowed down after only one generator was running. The current was perfect for this presentation and I highly recommend it.
Cast netted a huge Gizzard Shad and so I decided to put him on. I was slowly drifting the fish along when he started to get very nervous and then it stopped. My heart was racing as I braced for the rod to bend over. I reeled up and set the hook. I pulled the shad out of the fish's mouth. I reeled the shad up only to find it bleeding down the side of the body with teethmarks running down the fish. Either it was a large fish on interested in eating but playing, or it was a fish who bit off more than he could chew. Very exciting though!
