Jeremy (Jerdog) and I took his boat below Nickajack from about 5:30-9:30 pm last night. It looked like perfect conditions for a surface bite so we started out trolling some redfins with no success. We then started drifting 1oz shad lures just above the rocks. After a few snags we landed one small channel cat foul hooked in the side and continued to fish...still no striper.
After a while we went to search for some threadfin and Jeremy caught a gar in his net. Leg two of the junkfish slam was complete. There were huge schools of skipjack busting small threadfin all over the place so after trolling a bit more we tied on a shad dart and threw a couple good skipkjack in the livewell. We drifted them and then finally had a strong tug on the line - heavy fish but no striper...just a big drum. Junkfish slam complete!
I am not sure why the stripers were turned-off because we fished numerous techniques and all the right spots - It may have been that we were not matching the hatch and using small threadfin or I figured maybe they could have had plenty to eat from all the shad falling to the bottom from the skipjack feast on the surface. Anyway it was a perfect time on the water, we scored a big fish, and Jerdog's new boat treated us right...the Honda is perfect for trolling. Jerdog taught me a lot this time out and I really appreciate the trip!
