Had a good evening after work. Put in at Bennetts Lake around 4:30 Central. Fished a few docks, then moved to Mullen's cove, catching mostly smaller males. Around 7:30 Central, we moved to deeper water and found schools of shad. Our last 30 minutes on the water yielded three females in the 3 lb range (2.5 lb bodies, with guts the size of softballs), and one fish that fell a few ounces shy of 4 lbs. All very healthy-looking and hard-fighting fish. Water temps around 73 degrees. Best 5 went a little over 14 lbs. Pic of brother holding the largest.

I'm starting my season a couple months later than last year because I had trouble finding a shop that could fix my boat. Yesterday was my first day on the lake this year, so I'm pretty much still guessing for now. I'm really looking forward to summer. I usually do well on post-spawn & summer patterns when a lot of my fishing buddies are scratching their heads.

The shad were running 8-10 foot deep in pretty big schools in 12-18 foot of water off rocky points adjacent to shallower water. After the sun fell, the shad scattered and started flitting around the surface in smaller schools. There was a little surface action at that point, but nothing major.

We got into some surface action in the evening on Saturday. After reading your post, I'm beginning to wonder if we might have missed out on a deeper feed.
