Launched out of Bennett Lake at dawn this morning and hit several grass edges with top water without even a roll. I moved to the main river grass edges with a shallow running crank bait trying to locate some active fish. Caught a 12" fish so I then switched and started flipping a 11" worm in Red Shad. Wasn't long I had my first good 2.25 lb keeper. A few minutes later I had another bite and broke off during the hook set. Saying bad words to myself for not re-tying I rerigged and started back to flipping. Another bite another brake off. A had just put on brand new line: STREN SUPPER BRAID in 40 lb test. This should not be happening. I normally use 30 lb test Fire Line and have NEVER broken off with it. Needless to say I will be returning the Stren to the store for a refund. Has anyone else had similar problems with the Stren Supper Braid? Is there a special knot I should be using?

I removed a few feet of the Stren and put what little of the Fire Line I had left on the reel and went back to fishing. Caught a few more shorts and another 3 lb keeper.

I was real pleased with the fish bite, just not happy with the Stren line. The day turned out real nice also. I was all prepared for the heat but got rain instead which kept it cooler and more bearable. Got off the water at 11:00 AM and headed for my Son's band camp for the rest of the day.

I also tie a polomer(sp??) knot with braid. I also leave a pretty decent size tag end when cutting the knot off, braid has a tendency to cinch down on itself, thus coming unknotted if there is not enough tag end. This is what I've read and what I do. I use spiderwire stealth myself. Just thought I'd pass along my 2 cents. Carl

It's all in the hookset!!!

Good report Fishintenn! Glad you got on a few. I haven't used the Stren brand but have had decent luck with the Spiderwire brand. Hope you get a new and better spool for the next trip. Good fish! Thanks for the report.emoThumbsup

I use 30-50 lb spider wire for the stripers(when they show back up) and for the blue cats. I ALWAYS use a palomar knot with the braid. Nice fish for a hot morning!

The knot definitely has a lot to do with breakage. I like a polamar knot sometimes but have another knot and I don't know the name, but it has 100% knot strength and I've never had an issue. Also, you aren't crossing their eyes on the hookset are you? That was a problem I had with braid, now I just use my wrist to set the hook with it.

I think that is most of my problem. I am using heavy action rod and setting the hook too hard. However, I have never broken off the Fire Line. I tried to soften up on the second fish but still broke off. I do use a polomer knot and the break was at the knot.

And where was my invite to this little excursion? Don't say 'you were at work' because I could've walked out at any time...
