Jerdog and I went to Nickajack Dam after work tonight to see what was happening. We launched just before dark around 6pm. It was very windy, water temp was 59, and flood gates were churning up some pretty big waves below the Dam so we were sure to stay far away from them. We were lucky enough to mark a small bait ball so Jerdog was able to score a few threadfin with the cast net.
We started drifting anywhere that looked good, which was basically all over the place they were running so much water. We focused on current seams and eddies to begin with but tried numerous drifts from one end to the other. I caught one nice drum on one of the very first drifts as we were approaching the lock wall. The only other fish we caught was a striper just downstream from the center turbine boils. Nothing huge but it was nice to feel the run of a rockfish in that current! It was pretty much over after that so we left about 8pm. Not too bad for a couple of hours getting sloshed around in a lot of wind - I figured very little bait equals few fish and was happy to get what we did. All fish safely released. Thanks for the invite Jerdog!
