Hey all.

Thought I would try somthing a little different Friday and fished down at The Nick. Put in a Sullivans' and caught two before the outboard was fired up. I fished alot of grass between Sullivans' and Hales bar, with some small takers and one with shoulders.... He hit a little top water plug in 2 feet, when I got him to the boat, I had a 4 lb largie and 4 lbs of salad. Didn't mind though. I tried to fish most of the main channel grasslines but only had limited success. We fished buzzbaits, senkos, jerkbaits, flukes, and others. The senko was the only thing I caught any other fish on. Water temp 72.

Did you fish mostly the grass next to the channel or did you get up into any of the Bennett, Mullins or Cummings coves areas?

Dog,

I stayed just off of the main channel. That "seemed" to be where the baitfish action was taking place.
We just did not see much going on in the coves at all.

Thanks for the report Freebird - I think that's one of the the first I have read on that particular stretch of the river. Congrats on the 4 pounder!!!

Freebird, thanks, that's what I would have expected with the fall in temp. It doesn't look like the water level in Nickajack fluctuates very much so I guess that flow and the water temp may be the only factors that one has to think about down there. I would expect that after a few days of consistent water temps or slowly rising water temps that the fish would make some forrays into the shallows but until the conditions become more stable I would expect them to stay out on the river, maybe not too far from the shallows. Good luck next time you get out.

Thanks Dog, remember though, especially on Nick, if you are 10 feet out of the channel, you are in serious shallow water. I fished alot today with the boat in 15 ft + and fishing in 2 ft or less....The channel down there is narrow. Little advice, do not cut the bouys' down there,,,,,,,its a lower unit mistake waiting to happen.........I found out the hard way several years ago.....

I know about that one. One of my buddies that I fished a CBA tournament with was on some fish down at the cave and we ran the length of the Nick and I watched my depth finder like a hawk the whole way down there and he kept me away from the shallows. It was a bit nerve racking but I never got out of the channel except to fish a bit on the way back. It goes from 30-40 ft to nothing.
