Blake (SDFD504) and I hit the lake again this afternoon (2:30 - 5:45). Thinking that the cloudy, rainy afternoon would be good for the schooling fish. We were wrong.....we did not see as many bass chasing the shad as we did on Monday afternoon. We went to a couple of different coves off of the main lake near the nuclear plant today.

When the rain was falling the bass were not on top chasing the bait, when the rain stopped a few bass came up. It seemed that the bass were scattered out, no white bass were caught today. We were able to catch several largemouth bass (~8) , all were healthy and fat. We managed to loose as many fish as we got in the boat.emoBang All of the fish came on the silver buddy, pumped off of the bottom -- most of the fish hit on the fall. When we caught several of the threadfin shad on the silver buddies, we could expect to catch a largemouth in the general area.

We tried SB, Buzz baits, top waters and crankbaits without a bite. We tried several different baits in several areas without success.

Attached is a picture of the largest bass of the day, I caught it just before we left around 5:25. Best guess was around 3 pounds, Blake could not find the digital scale for all of his bandits!!! emoEek

What depth were you catching the bass? Were you vertically working the silver buddies or casting out and hopping them on the bottom?

All of the fish came in less than 5 feet of water, most were in 2 to 3 feet. We would see the balls of shad and then throw the silver buddy out and pull it off the bottom.

Pretty fish there sd29. Great to see that you and your son were able to share the beautiful rain that we had. If I am catching fish it doesn't matter how cold and wet I get I still want to fish. Just ask drumking.

Polo,

Blake was looking forward to going out Wednesday after he got out of school. We managed to stay dry, the Frog Toggs woked well. The way I work, we have to go when the opportunity presents itself and not when the weather is perfect.

I really thought the weather would have turned the fish on, but maybe the frontal passage was taking place while we were out. I know the temperature dropped while we were fishing. You can see the fog in the background.

I really enjoy being out with my son. He is the reason I started fishing again. The only thing that could have been better is that fish ending up on the end of Blake's line instead of mine. But we both enjoyed the afternoon, Blake caught a 14" fish that would have weighed over 2 lbs. Now is the time to catch the fat healthy fish.

Really enjoyed talking to you after the map meeting last month. emoBigsmile

SDFD29, I have a question?????
Why does Blake have a much larger number that you???? I know he has many more crank baits than you do....LOL there must be a good reason.... also, I agree with you about having fun fishing with your son(s). Always loved our fishing trips ....emoScratch

FA, the lower the number the higher you are up the totem pole per say. emoLaugh His number really should be SDFD23 now since he changed but he had been with 29 for so many years and his email has 29 in it. When you get into the low numbers that means you are either a chief or a captain in the department. Then when you get into the bigger numbers that tells you what company you are in and then your number in that company. Since I am still under 18 I am still part of the junior group so we get the 500 series of numbers.

Very good explaintion, Blake.... You stay with it, it is a good profession....I have had all that training when I was at Du Pont. We had our own fire protection out there so I have been to the state training, Rome, GA to the Meade Loss training center. So I know what you all are doing... Keep up the good work... emoGeezer

Actually FA I am not sure if Blake has more cranbaits than I do. I have accumulated mine over a longer period of time, and they are of a larger assortment than his Bandits. He took after me I guess. We are going to have to get a larger boat before long. Both us are pretty healthy and with all of the tackle and rods in the boat it is kind of cramped.

I think we could give Davo a run for his money!! emoSmile Blake counted the rods I had on the deck the other day (12) and told me I needed to streamline a little. So, a few were moved into the rod locker.emoScratch

Blake gave you a good explanation on the numbers, my radio number has been 29 for years (Rescue Captain / Paramedic). Now it is 23 as he mentioned (Station Captain).
