My dad and I went pre-fishing for a tournament we have coming up in a few weeks at Chickmauga Tuesday. Started out of Chester Frost at 7 am hit the grass just at the mouth of the cove on river and nothing. So pulled back a bit and threw around some schooling fish and caught first keeper of the day, a 12 inch spot that might have been 3/4 of a pound on a walking topwater bait.
We could not get another bite there so we ran up and across the river to a grass line that had some wind blowing on it. Lots of surface action, lots of fish chasing bait into the grass lines. I managed to get my from in front of one 15 inch largie. We did manage to catch 5 or 6 more fish, all non-keepers.
The wind made the area really hard to fish so after a bit we moved up above the nuke plant and fished a pocket and as the wind died off some some main lake grass. Back in the pocket we caught 4 or five shorties all on worms. We did see two very nice fish crusing the grass lines, but if you threw anything toward them they spooked away.
Contined to work our way back toward CF, staying on main lake points and grass lines, catching a few fish here and there but no other keepers.
Finally went back in a pocket about 2:20 pm and my dad manged to catch a nice 4.25 largemouth that was hiding in the shade of a tree in probably 2 feet of water. After that we called it a day.
Probably caught 16 to 20 fish, lost several other small fish on the way in, but other than the two early topwater fish, all fish came on weightless worm, texas-rigged, or shakey head worms. Most all fish we caught came in 2 to 8 feet of water.
The lake had billions and billions of tiny shad roaming around grass edges and in little holes in the grass, but we never got bit in the thick of a mat except one bite when I was trying to punch. Lots of fish crashing into shad along the edges, but most of those fish are running and gunning, if you get something right on top of them then you have a 25% chance to catch one.
Frustrating day on the water, had wind early and late in the day that really hampered fishing slow.
I tried to punch some mats and had two bites, also had one swipe at a chatterbait early in the day, but otherwise caught on worms.
