Fished a club tournament Thursday out of Chester Frost and it was not a great day for the visitors. Little wind, temps around 94, water temps from 81 to 88 by 3 pm.
First place was 11 and some change, second was 10 and third was 8 something, we caught 11 or 12 fish and had one 3.5 lb keeper.
Started the day by running down to the island at Harrison Bay and fishing the side facing the river channel and then the lower side of the main island. Lots of activity in that area, fish crashing bait into the grass, lots of fish crashing into bait over the deeper water. Fished frogs, popper, chatterbait, swimbait and worms. My dad caught one on a frog (short) that choked it, he also missed three others that only one of them actually had the bait. I had one hit on the frog, and it was as it was sitting still, I had a professional overrun and was pulling out a few loops and the fish hit the bait, but never actually got it. After seeing a ton of bait and fish crashing into it deeper we moved out and fished swimbait and worms. My dad caught two more shorts in that area and we both missed a few fish. Those fish were just just picking up the bait and sitting there with it.
We then moved around some deeper docks in Chester Frost area and along one grass line caught 3 fish. One on a zcraw, one on a big worm and on on a shakey head. Those fish wanted the bait just on the edge of the grass and they would really hammer it as it swam out. All those fish were also short, but some nice fish, one was over 2 pounds and was just 14 1/4 inches long. I did not bring any actual punching gear, and I think if you are good at that you might be able to catch a good bag because there were fish in or around grass pretty much anyplace we went. Fished a few docks caught one short spot, then retraced our steps and started flipping some of the deeper docks. Got the occasional bite, I caught two on back to back casts with two different baits off one stretch of grass and a dock but both were little guys. Fished a bunch of docks and grass and nada until we got to a dock that had a lot of shade you could actually fish. I flipped a big worm into the shade under the dock and the 3.5 bit. I pulled her out and I think that was the last fish we caught. Fished a few more docks, then moved and fished a few more and nothing. Weighed in at 3 and actually took the fish since it was so hard on us. Seemed to be hard for everyone. Big fish was a 4.11.
It was tough on us, and really hot, but still you have a great lake. We would have had a 12 to 13 pound bag if we could have kept all the legal other places keepers we caught.
