Fished Thursday in a club tourney out of Chester Frost and had a pretty good day.
We caught a bunch of fish from a foot deep to a couple around 10 feet deep and caught them multiple ways. Water temps started at 68 and by 3pm found some shallow water as warm as 73.
I think we missed a shad spawn bite first thing but we caught several small fish and a couple of keepers on a squarebill, then moved out to a big flat with shad busting all over it and my dad caught probably 6 on a jerkbait and a couple more keepers.
We made another move to a rocky secondary point with deeper water nearby where in the past we have caught several keepers. It was a good move as my dad lost a 4 + on a shakey head and after catching a small fish I was able to catch a 5.75 on the shakey head. We moved around the point and I was able to catch another 4 + on the worm and we caught about 10 more fish in the area all on the shakey head.
After multiple culls and multiple trips around that point we moved back in the pocket and while I did catch one more small keeper fish on a lizard we were not able to find any fish bedding. We did find one dock that might have 80 pounds of bass around it, but they are not bedding yet, just cruising around this dock and boathouse. I was able to get one bite on a lizard and I think my dad had a bite on a senko, but neither of us could get those fish in.
We caught a few more fish shallow back in a pocket, but nothing that helped. We finished with 17.38 and won the tourney with second being a 17 pound sack and third being 16.84. Big fish was a beautiful pre-spawn 7 pound fish.
This was my fifth time to the Chick, and I have to say that this was by far the busiest day I have ever seen on that lake. Between the people practicing for the BASS Open next week (we saw several pros on the water and a couple on the roads) to the guys practicing for the CBA, and the recreational boaters, jet skis and the like, the lake was hopping and rough even without much wind.
I have to thank you guys on here for helping us know what to do a bit, special thanks to JMAX his reports really helped us come up with a game plan for our tourney.
Lastly guys, I know the lake gets hammered with pressure, but you have a special lake right now. We culled at least a 12.5 pound sack Thursday easily if not more, and two days later I still have sore ribs from setting the hook so much. Every fish we caught be it 24 inches long or 12 inches long were fat, healthy fish, most of them looked pristine, or at worse they had a bloody tail which you would expect this time of the year. We did the weigh-in for the tournament, and I only saw one somewhat sickly looking fish, but I think that fish had just spawned out.
