Fished Weiss Saturday in a club tournament and it was a struggle to say the least. Water temp started at 84 got as high as 90 a couple of times in some backwater areas.
Started the day off with a long run up the river into a shallow canal/creek looking for some cooler water. While they were not generating yet, had lots of current coming in off the river into that creek. It made it hard to flip the downed trees and bushes but my dad picked up two small bass, one spot and one largemouth in the first 20 minutes of fishing. The progress then slowed to a crawl as we fished this creek back into a backwater area, had a few bites but no more fish. Got to the back of the creek where it started to open up into the backwater and there was a lot of bait and lots of fish crashing bait, but we managed one short largemouth on a squarebill and my dad lost about a two and a half pounder on a swimbait up in some water willow. After that we started moving back toward the mouth of the creek and I managed one small keeper largemouth on a worm and one short largemouth on a spinnerbait. Where the creek mouth was on the river was loaded with fish and bait, but getting those fish to bite was almost impossible. Tried everything there from topwater to traps and cranks and chatterbaits and spinnerbaits with just the one short to show for it. It was after 11 am at this point so we started working back down the river hitting places we have caught fish before. I caught one off a log on a different kind of worm than I had been throwing and that clued us into a pattern. My dad caught our best fish of the day a few minutes later and then I lost two in a row, one I saw was in the 2.5 to 3 pound range and the other felt like a decent fish, but neither of those fish had the hook I don't think. I was using a hook I normally use for creature baits on the worm and I don't think it was working well for getting a hook in the fish.
Anyway we ran back in knowing it had been tough for us and apparently for everyone else as well. We finished third with just 5.88 and actually got paid. First was 11 pounds and second was just 6.5 so those two lost fish really cost us a chance at first.
Fishing was really tougher than I have seen it at Weiss in years. Throw in the fact it was 95 degrees and not a cloud or a whif of a breeze after about 9 am and it was a brutal day to be on the water. We worked hard for that little limit and it actually worked out to get us some money back.

Congratulations on 3rd place its been that way all summer for me, I there every couple weeks because I have a camper there , that pond is not fishing like it should.
