I noticed comments yesterday where folks are putting oil in the gas tank and not using the separate oil injection. Is this after the motor has significant wear on it or straight out of the box? Also how long is gas OK in the boats tank?

People remove the oil system cause they fail and cost you money. Mercury's have plastic gears on the v-6 cranks and the strip cause they drive a steel gear. Then it has NO oil and this will scuff the cylinders. OMC's on the other hand will normally OVER oil and cause coking of carbon on the rings. A bad thermostat will accelerate this but not allowing the engine to get hot enough to burn off some of the carbon. I have rebuilt many merc's and omc's for oil system failure. I have removed it on engines that are only 2 years old. So there is no wear issue as far as when to remove it. I will not trust a oil system. I mix my own and I know what my mix is. Plus the mercury system is only good for 6,800 RPM's and my next engine will be about 2,700 RPM's above that!!LOL. Gas actually has a very short shelf life especially with ethenol in it. I wouln't leave it in for more than a few weeks without stable. If you have ethenol in your fuel and your engine has carbs, they ususally have drains that are easily gotten to drain. THe ethenol will eat aluminum. Hope this help you.

I can't tell you experience with them. I have never heard or seen anything bad about yamaha or suzuki oil systems. The one 130 yamaha I did seems to have a metal drive gear and a metel oiler gear. Best I can remember. Much better system than mercs. If you post year and hp I will ask some Yamaha experts and let you know what they say about it. Hope this helps.

I will check with them. Sorry so late. Working on a guys lower and engine all morning. I get a few I will check for you.

This is what I found out....In stock applications it is very reliable. As with any oil injected motor it is best to stick with one brand of oil in the oil tank. Using different brands of oil will cause a sludge to build up and clog the filter. Hope this helps.

I has actually been in fuel since the 80's they just didn't have to tell you about it unless it was 10%. You can test for ethanol very easily. If you are interested I will post how. Later!
