? on shifting linkage on merc

i have a 1985 merc 150 and on the shifter linkage on the motor it has a N for neutral and a F for forward and R for reverse should the linkage go past the letters to engauge the gear or right on it? it seems mine has to go all the way past the letters but my control box wont move it that far.just wandering if my control box got wore out. i also put a new cable on to see if that would fix it but no help.and does anyone have a control box for sale cheap.

They go about 3/4 to 1" past the letters on all that I have seen. The box may have a worn out/broken bushing and would be cheaper to repair than to replace. May buy the same problem you already have. Just my opinion...

where can you get new parts for the control box at?and thanks for the reply

Some of the parts may be no longer available. Take a pic of the control box. Look and see if you see any part numbers on it. Here is a link to control boxes prior to 86.
