It's that time of year again.... almost.... for me and Dad to head out on another adventure. 2007 was elk, 2008 was antelope, even though we both came home emptyhanded from that trip. this year, its off to the Cornhusker state, southwest Nebraska to chase mulies and whitetails with the ol' stick and string.

14 October 2009
Exactly one week away from the flight into Denver, where I get to meet up with my hero and best friend for another adventure. We will rent a car in Denver and drive a few hours to Imperial, NE to begin our 6 day bowhunt for the big midwest deer. Our tag is good for mule deer or whitetail, mulies being our preference.

Just one more week until we get to see if the time and practice will pay off. The money spent preparing for this hunt could buy a small home somewhere that's cheap to live, like NYC... on my new cam for the outback, new string and cable, new sight, new arrows, broadheads, quiver, a couple new pieces of camo clothing, new bow case to fly with, and all the gas i burned up driving back and forth to the archery range since early summer.

One week to see if the hours spent sweating in the summer sun at the range will pay off. To see if my muscles will take over automatically to make the shot, to see if the hundreds and hundreds of practice shots will pay off. My confidence in my abilities and equipment is at an all time high, my 80 yard groups would kill a softball, my 50 yarders will rival most bowhunters 20 yard groups. any deer within 40 or 50 yards (my hunting range) is in real trouble (maybe 60 if need be ;) ). Dad has been shooting a ton this year. Usually he's an average shot, but this year he's been working very hard, and is the most accurate with a bow he's ever been. My Mom comments on how much he practices, she's never seen him this pumped up about a bowhunt.

the anticipation for this upcoming hunt is unbelievable. I can hardly wait until 21 Oct. when i can board the plane headed west. We will be the first hunters in camp this year. There will be 3 of us total in camp, hunting 4300 acres. These deer have not been pressured and hopefully in a feeding pattern, preparing for the upcoming rut. The hunting will be in stands as well as spot and stalk if need be. Hopefully we can both connect on good deer. Knowing that at any moment in those 6 days I could kill the deer of a lifetime is an odd feeling. We will see, first we have to hunt hard and hunt smart, and hopefully 2 more dreams come true next week....

more to come when i get back at the end of oct....

Best of luck!!! Nothing like the anticipation of a big hunt. How lucky you are to have your Dad and to be healthy enough to still hunt with you. Hope you guys have a memorable trip and maybe even harvest a great animal.
Have these hunts been DIY or guided hunts??

Good luck - I can't wait to read your reports! Hope you have a memorable hunt with your dad.

bbd these have been guided hunts. I want to do a few diy hunts, and some we will, or go with friends, but to go chase animals we've never hunted and have a reasonable expectation at getting an animal is sometimes difficult. not to mention its tough to find the time to go scout before season, then take another week of vacation for the actual hunt. Plus if you shop around, its almost as cheap to do the guided hunt, once you factor in hotel, food, skinning, processing, rental car (if the guide has airport service), etc...

I shop around a lot, and start saving as soon as one hunt is over for the next years hunt. i am always looking at outfitters and guides for deals. with the economy in the shape its in its a great time to do a guided hunt. we are paying less than half of most of the KS and IL whitetail hunts, and going for 6 full hunting days, and yes, the people are reputable. to find this outfit i used Butch Manasse, google him. he's a booking agent out in wyoming. i am on his email list so every week or so i get emails of his special deals, and this was one of them. it was tough deciding where to go this year. we really wanted to go after antelope, and found an outfit in wyoming that regularly produces big ones, but i really wanted to do a bowhunt, and we both really want a nice mule deer. though i am certainly not opposed to a big whitetail either.

and yes i am very fortunate to have Dad in good health to go on adventures with me. He is one very lucky man, and for those of you that are newer, many many prayers were sent up for him by this great group of friends on CFF. He fell while taking down a ladder stand in early march of 2007 and broke his pelvis into 6 pieces. he nearly impaled himself on a small diameter stump of a tree he cut down for a shooting lane, and then waited for 6 hours in the cold until help arrived. he didn't walk for 4 months, and has had to do a lot of work to recover. but thank the Good Lord, he has made a great recovery. he can't get around quite like he use to, but pretty close. I'm not sure if we'll ever get to to too many mountain hunts in the future, but we're going to try and get in every hunt possible before we have to call it quits.
