That issue has been at loggerheads for awhile. Most of the past two decades have been spent tearing down government housing, yet no alternatives have been provided be it by section 8 or other means. During the same time period traditional housing cost during the same time frame have skyrocketed in the metro area. Regardless of your political beliefs on the government housing/section 8 etc, the people caught in the fray have really been shafted. Yes it is somewhat surprising of the reaction especially without looking at the details, Yet due to the arduous road they have been placed, combined with ineffective planning and the heat, I find it somewhat non-surprising. Which in and of itself is sad.

Evidently, in my first post, I dindt want to ad all the letters in my words. LOL I need to proof-read a little better. I'm not necessarily knocking section 8 all together. I had a family member who used it at one time. If gov aid was used like it was origonally designed, to help the misfortunate get back on their feet, I wouldn't have a problem with it. It has become a snowball effect and destroys peoples ambition to succeed in life and rely on others to meet their needs. This is very sad to me.

DEAD-ON I worked for public housing for over twenty-five years. In Section-8 for about 6 yrs. Public Housing was planned to be a way to help people get on their feet. Instead it quickly became the lifetime goal of most of the folks who applied.I know personally of generations in families who have no intentions of ever doing anything but live in public housing. I know a college student with a grand mother who lives in the bricks, a mother who lives in public housing, she is on Section-8 and says proudly that if she has anything to do with it her 12 Yr old daughter will get her own place as soon as she can have kids. Sadly she is by far not the exception, she is the rule. People may think that most folksare there trying to do better. Far from being so. It is hard to get the assistance as demonstrated by the ATL video crowds. If you are getting assistance, you would be a fool to give it up. The reasonI can say that is due to the fact the Government offers no incentives for families to improve themselves. In fact you are burdened beyond your means to try to improve yourself. To explain that; I do not have current figures but back in the early ninetiesa family of four receiving Gov assistancehad an average income of $32K. That included housing, food stamps, health care, dental care, utilities and some living expenses. If a mother was to get a $6.00 per hr job at McD's that was income. Her rent was then based on income which meant she would pay most of her check toward rent, her food stamps would be cut and their free health care and dental was out the window. As I said, due to the system, A person would be a fool to try and improve their lifestyle. I had some ideas thatI shared with some high-up HUD officials but nothing as far as I know ever came from it. One of my several plans was to give wavers to subsidized families to decrease over five years. The first year any and all income earned through valid employment would not count toward reducing benefits. The second year a waver for eighty percent of the income and on down for five years. That may sound in appropriate but the added income changes a families desires to grow. The five year period reduces the impact and it would actually wean families into a self sufficient lifestyle.

I will stop here before I really get started.
